WKNH, Keene State’s dedicated radio station, is back on the air and ready for the fall semester to bring a new batch of members.
According to WKNH’s General Manager, senior William April, WKNH doesn’t just play music. Talk shows are among some of the other shows played on the station. “You can do a lot of other things as well, as long as it’s accepted and under FCC rules,” April said.
April said that WKNH is also planning other events for the fall semester. “We have a Halloween event planned, and a Christmas event in the works as well,” he said. “And then we’re planning for two events next semester.”
April said that his favorite part of being a WKNH member is the community the club has. “We all are united in one way,” he said. “Even if we all like certain different genres or come from different backgrounds, we all love music.”
WKNH’s Program Director, senior Connor Reddig, echoed April, saying that the club unites students across different programs and extracurriculars. “It’s a lot of fun,” Reddig said. “And there’s always a lot of people to get involved with or talk to if you want to get involved with the club.”
“A lot of clubs, you see a lot of people with similar interests,” he added. “Whereas in WKNH, it’s just one interest that almost everyone has.”
Reddig said students should consider joining WKNH for a new experience. “It allows you to put yourself out there, but also in a safe way if you’re afraid of it too,” he said. “Because you’re also just in a radio room, and no one can really respond to you unless they’re listening. And even then, if they’re listening to you and texting you about it, it’s probably a friend of yours and they care, and that’s just nice on its own.”
April said that he never considered radio before joining WKNH. “I used to listen to the radio all the time as a kid, but when I grew up more and joined it [WKNH] and gave it a shot, it became a big part of my life,” he said.
According to Reddig, all students who are interested in WKNH have to do is show up to a meeting. “There’s a little bit of work you have to do, just a test so we know you know what the radio rules are,” he said. “So we just have to train people slightly to make sure that they know what’s going on.”
WKNH’s Assistant General Manager, junior Sean Cattigan, said that his favorite part of WKNH is the people. “That’s where I’ve made most of my college connections,” Cattigan said.
Cattigan said students should join WKNH for the laid-back vibe. “This is the perfect club because you come in, do your show for one hour once a week,” he said. “You come to general member meetings once every two weeks. So everything’s all laid back, and everyone who runs it, we’re pretty chill and easy to go with.”
WKNH meets every other Sunday at 8:00 p.m. in the Madison Street Lounge. The next meeting is September 20th.
