On Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25, the KSC Women’s Golf team played in the Little East Conference (LEC) playoffs at the Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, Massachusetts, which was hosted by Westfield State University. Keene State defended its LEC championship title and overcame a first-day deficit against the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors behind a program-best final round.
After day one, the Owls entered the final day of the championships trailing Eastern Connecticut State University by a single stroke, 370-369. However, on Day two, the Owls rushed ahead to claim the victory. The team ended up combining for 12 pars and two birdies on the front nine alone. This built a 21-shot advantage by the turn for the Owls.
This victory for the Keene State Women’s Golf team means they automatically qualify for the 2027 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia, scheduled for May 11-14, 2027.
Senior Madison Mousley shot 86 through 18 holes in round one and shot 77 in round two for a total of 163. Mousley tied for third overall in the tournament. Junior Abigail Weiterman followed close behind in fifth place and shot 89 through her first 18 holes. Weiterman shot an 86 the second round. Junior Mackenzie Hagearty placed eighth and earned Second Team All-Conference Honors.
Before the championship, some of the players shared how the team prepared. First-year Caitlyn Savage said that “Our biggest focus has been putting [and] chipping, getting on the green and reducing the amount of putts we have. That helps us lower our scores.” The team’s emphasis was on the championships, especially with having more pressure than normal due to winning last year. “The biggest challenge for the team during the championship was staying focused and not stressing out too much,” Savage said. “We are really supportive of each other and in my opinion it feels like I have a bunch of older sisters.”
The Women’s Head Golf Coach, Jeffrey Timmer, reflected on the very successful back-to-back championship won by his team. “The women’s team had an incredible weekend,” Timmer stated. “They say it is hard to repeat as champions because expectations can cause more pressure. However, the women on our team handled it so well and performed at a very high level for two days. I couldn’t be prouder of them.” Timmer also stated that “As their coach, it is just a lot of fun to watch them and be around them, they make me laugh and still show the ability to focus when necessary. The championship was a result of all the hard work put in by the entire team this fall.”
Savage concurred with her coach. “I’m really proud of the team for winning the championship,” Savage said, “I’m so proud of the girls and Coach Timmer is amazing. He’s always so supportive, and so is [Assistant Coach] Eric Sandstrum. I couldn’t ask for a better team; they deserved to win.”
