Senior forward Ashley Bates contributed to both of Keene State’s goals, giving them the win 2-1.
On Thursday, April 15, KSC hosted Castleton University. KSC saw CU for the first time since its final game of the 2019 season. Facing Castleton, KSC began its game with starter Abigail Terrinca in net. Putting up a strong defense, first-year midfielders Elizabeth Kopicko and Alexa Skinner, senior defense Maggie Vogt and junior defense Marianna Panakis began the game for Keene State. Starting at midfield, junior midfielder Victoria Reynolds, first-year forward Rachel Souza and sophomore twins Kayleigh and Amanda Marshall worked together to create chemistry on the field. Setting up an impressive offense in the beginning of the game was first-year forward Maya Baker and senior midfielder Sarah Carron.
Within minutes of each other, both teams put goals up on the board. Four-year player Bates took a shot 28 minutes into the first. Deflecting off of Castleton’s own Stephanie Burkhammer, the ball found its way into the net scoring an own-goal in favor of Keene State. Two minutes later, Castleton tied the score with a breakaway by Brytney Moore. This would be the last action the board would see until the near end of the game.
With five minutes left to go in the game, Baker sent a through ball to Bates, setting Bates up for a one-on-one with CU’s goalkeeper. Bates made no mistake to place the ball cleanly into the bottom right hand corner, putting the game away within the final minutes. KSC would go on to win the game 2-1, but it was not all smooth-sailing for Keene State Thursday night.
Skinner received the first yellow card of the season in the 67 minute. Playing her aggressive defense game, Skinner grabbed the jersey of a Castleton player. Receiving this warning, Skinner gave CU a free kick halfway through the second.
Coming up next for Keene State’s women’s soccer team, April 22 the Owls will host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 6 p.m.
