Keene State students performed various works of art at the Night Owl Café (NOC), located on the second floor of the L.P. Young Student Center. This past Friday, Sept. 18, the Office of Student Involvement hosted an Open Mic Night in the NOC, with people being able to come in with a group of friends, sing individually or in a group, tell a story, share random thoughts or just sit at the counter and enjoy the atmosphere while having a drink.
Adsel Sparrow, who is the manager and oversees the Night Owl Café, said that the NOC has a Karaoke Night at least once a month. Other student organizations have held events in the NOC, such as Delta Phi Epsilon’s Karaoke Night. Solar Fest was also held in the Night Owl Café both this past year and the year before, as well as the Class of 2030’s welcome party, Hootie’s Roundup.
“We had a great time doing it,” said Sparrow. “We’re so happy about the turnout and enjoyed all we had to offer. We are certainly happy for that.”
At the Open Mic Night, many students performed. Some read poems, some performed stand-up comedy routines and some played instruments. Sophomore Jaedin Bryan sang “Forever and Always” by Taylor Swift.
“There were a few other people that I knew who were gonna sing tonight, and I really wanted to come out and support them,” Bryan said.
Junior Dylan Fisher said he came to the event and wanted to read some of his poems and thoughts to people and see what other people were doing.
“I read some of the poetry I’ve written throughout my life,” said Fisher. “I am planning on putting it into a book at some point, and I wanted to get reactions to it.”
Sophomore Julia Hodsdon sang an original song she created called “Self Portrait,” which she said she wrote about a year ago.
“It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written just because I like how deep it is, and I love putting myself out there, so I just decided to do this,” said Hodsdon.
Hodsdon added that the turnout for the event was great.
“I think they did really good with that,” she said. “I was a little scared that it was going to be not very energetic, but they were very energetic and did not disappoint.”
The turnout of the event was positive, with many people saying they would go to an Open Mic Night at the Night Owl Café again.
While many people performed, many others were there to support their friends and have a good time. “I’m mostly here to watch everyone else and have a good time,” said junior Paul Mason.
The Night Owl Café is open every day from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Drinks and popcorn are free for anyone to take, making it a popular destination during Bingo Nights and events hosted by student organizations.
