By using their dance skills, pom-poms and bright red posters, the Keene State dance team got many generous donations to support their goal of attending Nationals in Florida at their Dance Team Car Wash event this past Saturday, Sep. 13. Local Keene residents and passersby took the opportunity to get a car wash from the team near the Alumni Center lot.
From noon to 3 p.m., the team scrubbed, rinsed and washed to the best of their ability, making lots of customers satisfied with a nice clean car and a better mood for the day. The team got lots of attention by pointing, yelling and dancing to people driving by the Alumni Center.
The captain of the dance team, Riley McGrath, used her leadership skills to keep her squad motivated and to have fun. She stated that she reminds the team “of the end goal which is getting to nationals and doing fun things like playing music and making signs together.” McGrath said she cares a lot about the team’s goals, but she also makes sure that her team has fun while doing events. She said she wants the team to bond and connect. “Yeah, we just make it fun,” McGrath said. The team’s sense and appreciation for camaraderie, which was very important for them during the car wash, will also be needed for competition.
This car wash reminded local residents of the passion Keene State students have for the academics, sports teams or clubs they are all a part of. McGrath said it raises school spirit. “It’s a fun event to get easy donations and help our team go to nationals,” said McGrath.
Another member of the dance team, Starr Cottone, said her favorite part of the event was, “listening to music and dancing with my friends.” Cottone said music is something that made this event really fun for the team. Cottone also described how much fun it was holding up posters and waving people over. The posters were in red and black lettering to match the team’s bright red pom-poms. One of them read “KSC Dance Team car wash,” and another said “FREE Car Wash.”
The team’s efforts throughout the day moved it closer to the goal for the team to travel and compete in Nationals in Florida. Other clubs and teams around campus hold car washes in hopes of raising funds for themselves.
