Friday, May 1, was Labor Day (Tag der Arbeit) in Germany. Similar to our American understanding of the holiday, many Germans celebrate with family, grilling and enjoying the warm spring weather. However, many participate in more politically themed activities during the day as well.
I was able to walk through Kreuzberg, which was a sea of people, by early afternoon. At my first stop in Mariennenplatz, I saw the events the political party Die Linke (The Left) was hosting. They offered a packed schedule from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. with musical acts and political speakers. They also offered food, drink stalls and merchandise stalls.
As I elbowed my way through the crowd, I was able to make my way to Görlitzer Park. The park was more boisterous than the family-friendly Die Linke gathering, with lots of people taking part in the unofficial German pastime of day-drinking. I powered through my lukewarm beer, since they were being sold faster than they could chill and I soaked in the atmosphere; it was like diet-Woodstock. People of all stripes were enjoying their time in the park, partying and protesting fascists.
To those at Keene State who are graduating this May, I wish you the best and have a great summer, everyone! I am New Hampshire-bound on May 26.
