Did I miss something? One day it’s snowing and the next it’s shorts weather? Keene, N.H. has to have some of the most confusing weather out of any of the places that I have lived, but who cares?
It’s finally warm enough to be able to do something outside.
Over the past few weeks prior to this warm spell I was itching to do something. I was getting restless and poor Boom Boom felt the effects, as I would try to pick fights with him on almost an hourly basis.
Finally, I was able to emerge out of the house, adjust my eyes to the sunlight, and finally be able to be outside. I imagine it is the same feeling a bear has when it wakes up from hibernation.
In a celebration of being able to venture outside, here’s the top few things I am most excited about spring.
Is there anything that marks the beginning of good weather better than baseball? The only other thing that can top it is slushies from 7-11.
One of my all time favorites is the game of pickle. I always have a blast playing it. It’s like chess match between the two throwers and the runner.
I find it very similar to the Zombies versus Humans game.
Eventually you are going to lose, but you want to see how far you make it before the end.
In addition to playing a simple game of catch or pickle, there is the ever popular game of Wiffle Ball.
Made nearby in Shelton, Conn., Wiffle Ball is one of the best quad games around. The game is less about being good and more about having fun.
Everyone can play, from those who haven’t picked up a bat since T-Ball, to the ones who regularly take swings in the cage. I literally cannot wait for the intramural Wiffle Ball to start up. Let me know if you’re trying to join a team.
A new addition to my favorite springtime activities is the latest hobby I picked up, skateboarding.
Originally, skateboarding was supposed to be kind of a one time thing where I could write a column about it, similar to the snowboarding one earlier in the year.
Opinions Editor Coleman Bentley and Senior Photographer Chris Palermo showed me the ropes and I worked for a few hours to learn the basics. The day was not enough for a whole column but I did pick up a new hobby.
I think the thing that I like so much about skateboarding is that it’s really hard to get good at. It’s something that will keep you occupied forever.
Although it seems kind of bro-ish to be skating around Appian Way with a lacrosse pinnie or even no shirt at all, it’s relaxing just to kick and push around campus.
If you see me, just please don’t mistake me for a bro or laugh when I will almost certainly fall.
Seeing as we live in New Hampshire it almost seems that you have to enjoy going for a hike.
I love being outdoors. My city friends call me a hippie as they make comments such as, “If I wanted to see trees I would go in my back yard.” However, there is more to going for a hike than that.
There is something awesome about going on a hike with your friends. It is such an experience. There are always awesome inside jokes and funny stories that come out of each hike. There is just something special about going out on Mt. Monadnock. I have gone three times and I can’t wait to go for the fourth time.
Finally, I saved the best and most frustrating one for last, golf. After Master’s weekend, and what a weekend it was, the golf bug bit me.
Last summer, I was able to get somewhat decent at golf as I was able to hit the range three or four days of the week over the summer. Looking at what the recent job market is, I will have opportunities to get better.
The best part of spring is just being able to go outside.
Whether it be barbequing with some friends or going for a run outside, it is by far the best time of the year.
After the long, cold New England winter, it’s hard to resist the allure of the warm summer sun and cool, relaxing breezes.
The weather can be really fickle in New Hampshire, and we should enjoy it while we can.
So put down the video games, turn off the TV, and go outside and enjoy some of this awesome weather because before you know it, it’s gone.
