Update: Two Keene State students involved in accident

The Equinox recently reported that two Keene State College students were involved in an accident. It has been confirmed that the two students were part of a two-vehicle crash near a logging site in Stoddard, N.H.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, March 23, a Chevy Cruze collided with a log truck at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 23 in Stoddard.

According to the New Hampshire State Police (NHSP) Facebook page, first-year Kelsey Mayer and sophomore Allison Yanski were traveling westbound on Route 9 approaching the logging site when the truck driver, Donald Warner, was preparing to back into the logging site.

According to a press release issued by the Stoddard Fire Department, both Mayer and Yanski were trapped in the vehicle, and the extrication time was extensive. Extrication is the process of removing a vehicle from around an individual or individuals because normal vehicle exiting strategies are inadvisable due to injury or vehicle damage.

Stoddard crews were assisted at the scene by State Police and fire crews from Keene and Sullivan, stated the press release.

NHSP stated that Mayer sustained serious life-threatening injuries and is being treated at Concord Hospital. Yanski sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is being treated at Cheshire Medical Center. Warner was uninjured in the accident.

The press release stated that the accident remains under investigation by the State Police Department.

KSC President Melinda Treadwell sent an email regarding the accident to the college community later that same morning.

Our thoughts, prayers and love are with the students, their families, and all of their friends, as well as anyone else injured in the crash,” stated Treadwell in the email.

Counseling staff will be available to the college community at the Wellness Center.

Stoddard Fire Chief Trevor Anderson referred The Equinox to the press release issued by the department and had no further comment.

Stoddard Police Chief David Vaillancourt did not respond to a request to comment.
