In December of last year Benjamin Mecklenberg, the former coordinator of intramural sports at Keene State College, was arraigned on felony and misdemeanor charges, as well as forging documents on behalf of Keene State College students.
Several anonymous students came forward about the scandal. Mecklenberg purposely gave students too many hours, so too much money was deposited into their account. The students would then pay back the difference to Mecklenberg himself, in cash.
Court documents obtained from the Cheshire County clerk’s office revealed that he missed his arraignment date on April 27 of this year.
Following that, an arrest warrant was filed by Judge John Arnold on May 20, and Mecklenberg was arrested by the Sheriff’s department of Keene on July 27, due to his absence in court.
Financial records show that Mecklenberg was held on a $3,000 bail, and his current address is 22 Ryan Rd., Saco, ME.
In addition to these recent court dates, John Gasaway, the assistant Cheshire County district attorney, also filed a motion to push his two Class B felonies to Class A.
Mecklenberg is also forbidden to return to KSC campus, he must remain in ME or NH at all times, cannot be extradited, and cannot posses a firearm.
He is being represented by the NH Public Defenders Office, and his next court dates are a final pretrial on Sept. 27, with a target date of Jan. 13, 2012 for a speedy trial.
In addition to his wrongdoings at KSC, Mecklenberg also ended up skipping out on rent payments. His last known address in NH was the Coach and Four Motor Inn located at 755 Monadnock Highway in Swanzey.
Peggy Allen, co-owner of the Coach and Four Motor Inn, did receive a check for his remaining balance. Allen did not think she would see her money again, considering his sudden departure and legal troubles.
“I received a money order for the full balance, there was no return address and I haven’t heard from him since. It’s not too often you hear back from a former tenant,” said Allen.
Since Mecklenberg’s departure from KSC in March recreational and intramural sports have not changed much.
“Other than hiring a new staff, nothing really has changed,” said Lynne Andrews, director of recreational sports.
Taylor Tully has been named the new coordinator of recreational and intramural sports.
“Taylor will coordinate the [intramural sports] program based on what we have done in the past but adding her graduate school experiences to different aspects such as officials and staff training,” said Andrews.
Tully’s first day as the coordinator of recreational and intramural sports was July 25 of this year.
Tully graduated from New Berlin Lacrosse College in 2009 with a degree in exercise management. She later served as New Berlin’s intramural supervisor and received her Master’s Degree in sports management at Georgia Southern University.
“I want to get the campus more involved as much as possible, and provide as much as I can to the students. I want to meet the needs and requests of the students, and get them excited about the intramural sports program,” Tully said.
Tully has already hired one new scorekeeper and one new official since her introduction to KSC. She has also created a Facebook page to keep players and students updated on intramural sports events.
“I want to bring the program to another level. I want players to be more involved, instead of just coming to a game or two every week. We are in the process of creating top ten lists of players, player profiles, and championship photos,” added Tully.
