Mason Library changes procedure to promote ‘responsible printing’

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, Student Assembly called their second meeting to order at promptly 6:30 p.m.

During the discussion and action portion of the meeting, the Dean of the Mason Library, Irene Herold spoke of the many changes the library has and will endure during the 2011-2012 school year.

Most prominent of these changes is print piloting. Due to budget cuts, Herold said the $36,000 spent per year on the printing budget alone does not fit into the $18,000 supply budget.

With this said, the library will be monitoring the number of pages printed through a print authentication system.

Each student at KSC has had $25 preloaded onto their student accounts, which allows each student to print 500 pages per semester.

There has been speculation that after the $25 runs out that each student has to pay 5 cents per page, said Herold. However, as of right now that is not true. “If you run out we will give you another $25 on your student account,” said Herold.

Herold emphasized that this is just a test run and nothing is set in stone.

The piloting test trial will figure out how many students are going over 500 pages a semester.

“My idea is not that the library wants to make money,” said Herold. “My goal is to promote environmental stewardship.” Herold hopes that by regulating the number of pages printed will promote more responsible printing.

In other library news, there has been a new media viewing room installed in the library. Herold explained the media viewing room allows students to plug their lap tops into a panel and have the image on their laptop project onto one of two flat screens.

Herold said the media viewing stations are great for group work and projects.

The media viewing room is on a first-come-first-serve basis, but can be reserved ahead of time by signing up at the circulation desk, said Herold.

In addition to this media viewing room, the Parents Association purchased and opened a classroom in the library with the same technology. There are an additional four stations available in this room. Herold said each station has six plug-ins which can allow the room to accommodate 24 people at one time.

Sticking with the media theme, the Mason Library’s website will become “Ipad and Smartphone” friendly, said Herold. The website could  become mobile friendly as soon as this semester or as late as next semester, she added.

In other government news, Vice President Katelyn Williams reminded assembly members that freshman elections are Monday, Sept. 19 through MyKSC announcements.

  23. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
