The Monadnock Autonomous Student Union (MASU) hosted an Art Night at the Redfern Arts Center on Wednesday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m.
Members met in the third floor studio at the Redfern and worked on various art projects.
According to previous reporting by The Equinox, the Monadnock Autonomous Student Union is, “a self-governing organization focused on bettering the lives of students across the Monadnock region.” MASU is not affiliated with Keene State College, and does not operate under a traditional e-board.
“The Student Union is meant to represent the voice of the students,” said sophomore Dexter Keegan. “We’re a horizontal organization … in Keene State terms, it means everyone’s on the e-Board and everyone’s decisions matter equally.”
“We are planning on doing events like this weekly,” said Keegan. “There’s art night, movie night, walk the town night and study night. We plan to do those once a week on a rotating schedule.”
Previous events that MASU have held include vigils, political protests, informational sessions and other social nights.
Senior Vincent Hargreaves said that he joined MASU because of his passion for protecting human rights.
“I can’t stand for people who believe that certain human beings shouldn’t have rights,” Hargreaves said.
He added, “I just truly believe in wanting to uplift everybody in the community, wanting to support people in the community and making this community a safe place for everyone,” he added.
Hargreaves said he planned to work on various posters during the Art Night.
Sophomore Robbie Maciorowski said they joined the union because they agreed with their ideas.
“I really like being a part of something that matters,” Maciorowski said. “I love the social events that they do too.”
Maciorowski worked on a piece for their painting class during the Art Night.
“It’s a study of a photo that I took from an abandoned factory that I visited,” Maciorowski said.
Junior Charlie Grace said they also joined because they agreed with MASU’s ideals.
“I feel like there’s a lot of things that could be improved upon and some students feel like they don’t have the power to do that,” they said. “So the Student Union is kind of a good place to talk with people and organize and rally together.”
During the Art Night, Grace worked on a zine that they plan on making soon.
“I’m still in the drafting stuff, but it’s more of an autobiographical thing of experiences,” they said.
