Welcome back film lovers, here is another film review brought to you by yours truly.
Over the past weekend, I got the chance to watch Hirokazu Koreeda’s film titled “Monster.” The film is about a mother trying to figure out what is happening to her son at his school.
The film tackles the subject of bullying and adolescence. The beginning of the film is in the point of view of the mother who is noticing strange things happening to her son.
The mother eventually gets to talk to the principal at her son’s school which brings up more problems than solutions. With talk of the teacher abusing her son, the film begins to show another point of view, the teachers. This leaves you questioning who the real “monster” is by showing multiple points of view.
The ending of the film is up to one’s own interpretation. I will not go into any further detail because I think the film is best going into it blindly.
My favorite part of the film was seeing how different my opinion would change based on whose story I was seeing. I feel as if the movie tackled some serious issues while also being entertaining and not over the top with drama.
While there were some moments in the film that confused me, I do not have much to complain about. I think the film was a great watch and even made me tear up a bit towards the end.
I got the opportunity to see this film at the Putnam Theater hosted by the Keene State Film Society. This screening was a special one because it was projected on the theater’s brand-new projector. The projector made the film bigger, better and louder.
I felt as if I was able to transport myself into the film’s world and really allow myself to fall into the story. I highly recommend checking out the theater’s new system.
I give the film ‘Monster’ a 3.5/5 stars and recommend watching it. The next film will be “Perfect Days” which is about a city janitor who sees the world in a positive light. Until next time, stay warm out there.
