Pop stars, movie icons, and general celebrities all converged at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

With no single host for this year’s VMA, each person presenting awards brought their own talent and taste to the event.

Lady Gaga was one of the first artists to open the event; she dressed as her male alter ego Joe Calderone and began to smoke on stage while ranting about Lady Gaga.

After the on-stage rant she began to sing her latest hit song “You and I.” Queen guitarist Brian May joined Gaga for the song and created a rocking opening for the awards.

After the duo departed the stage, Kevin Hart began to give an opening speech complaining how he was not able to host the event in its entirety.

After Hart’s speech came the first award, Best Pop Video, which was awkwardly presented by artist Nicki Minaj and actor Jonah Hill.

Their conversation before presenting the nominees focused on Hill’s recent weight loss, which was followed by a “Why did the chicken cross the road?” joke which ended with a Jonah-Hill-style punch line.

The nominees for this category were Adele for “Rolling in the Deep,” Bruno Mars for “Grenade,” Britney Spears for “When the World Ends,” Katy Perry for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” and Ne-Yo for “Give Me Everything.”

The winner for this award was pop artist Britney Spears.

Snowboarder Shaun White and singer Miley Cyrus presented Best Rock Video after Hill and Minaj departed the stage.

Nominees for the category included Foo Fighters for “Walk,” Cage the Elephant for “Shake Me Down,” Foster the People for “Pumped Up Kicks,” The Black Keys for “Howlin’ for You,” and Mumford and Sons’ “The Cave.”

The winners of the Moon Man were the Foo Fighters.

After Best Rock Video came “The Beastie Boys of the Future” played by comedians Jack Black, Seth Rogan, and Will Ferrell to present the award for Best Hip-Hop Video.

Nominees included Lil Wayne featuring Cory Gunz for “6’7’,” Kanye West featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi for “All of the Lights,” Chris Brown with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes for “Look at Me Now,” Lupe Fiasco’s “The Show Goes On,” and Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass.”

Minaj took the award for this category in a mix of joy and excitement.

Justin Bieber took the award for Best Male Video.

After Best Male came a fantastic dance performance by artist Chris Brown.

During his performance he danced to several different genres of music and ended it by flying across the audience.

After Brown left the stage, Lady Gaga came up to introduce a tribute act to Britney Spears.

The tribute act was a group of young girls dancing to various Spears songs all dressed in her various outfits for her music videos.

Lady Gaga then presented the Micheal Jackson Video Vanguard Award to Spears, which was followed by a performance by Beyoncé.

  1. Bruce- more Americans should educate themselves particularly about the truth of their history. As Luke so accurately implies, many people have bad intentions and deceive without honor or integrity. As a God fearing Christain American decedent from African Slaves who was born in Agana, Guam at the end of the Korean conflict (both parents born and bred in Indiana honorably served in Korea ) both you and Lukes apparent hyper-sensitivity to nonWASP probably classify me as not a citizen.Be glad Obama is not a decedant of American slavery the deception&lack of integrity of YOUR FOREFATHERS could revisit you Cracker!

  11. Today, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a twenty five foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone!

  12. “I’ve gone ahead and bookmarked http://keene-equinox.com/?p=822 at Digg.com so my friends can see it too. 14. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  17. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  18. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  19. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  20. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  21. I like this site very much, Its a really nice spot to read and incur information. “The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.” by Confucius.

  22. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
