The sound of smashing bricks and mechanical clamor fills the air as students head to their classes; some of these students head to the buildings on the KSC campus while others must walk to portables located off campus.
With the demolition of the Adams and Butterfield buildings, students studying architecture, safety studies, and product design take their classes in portables waiting for the new Technology, Design, and Safety Center (TDS Center) to open.
This building, however, will not open until August of next year.
The TDS Center will house students majoring in architecture, safety studies, product design, innovation programs and the new nursing program.
The building will have energy efficient classrooms and labs.
Jay Kahn, vice president of Finance and Planning, decided with a project team to make the building as green as possible with recycled building materials, air source heating pumps, and waterless urinals.
“(We are) setting a goal at a zero net energy building that together with a goal for green building design has led the project team to lots of options to satisfy both ideas,” Kahn said.
Kahn put a $12.3 million budget on the building and due to other design ideas, he predicts there will be more to pay for.
He predicts this mainly with the addition of the photovoltaics roof that is an electric generation that will tie into the building and be the electrical source.
Photovoltaics takes solar radiation and converts it into direct current electricity by using semiconductors that will line the roof of the building.
This idea was part of the design but unfortunately not part of the cost.
“(Extra costs) are inevitable, such as utility tie-ins and costs that could not be recognized prior to construction,” Kahn said. Apparently, they have not been too bad so far.
The demolition of the Adams building is already finished and the ground work for the TDS building is beginning.
The building will be two stories and 53,000 square-feet. Demolition for the Butterfield building will begin shortly. During the demolition of the Adams building, construction workers were seen separating metals from concrete.
They plan on reusing the materials in the building, breaking down the concrete to use it again and using the metals in the frame work or in some other way.
All furnishings from the buildings were removed and either put in storage to be reused in the building or sold.
Many teachers were asked what they would like to see in the new building.
Richard Wallace, architecture adjunct faculty member, explained that he wanted more technology for the students and himself to work with. He was thinking of more computers for the students and a large screen in the front of the room for him to be able to teach in a more technological way.
“I think it’s going to be more like it feels like it’s our building made for us,” Wallace said.
Jim Pelto, a Sustainable Product Design and Innovation teacher, explained that the new building will help students in many ways.
“After students graduate (after working in this building they will realize) this is the kind of work environment I want, this is what I want to design,” he said.
Pelto believed that the old building had seen its time and he was excited when someone else had noticed it too and was taking a chance with the new building. Both teachers look forward to the new building and believe that it will be a good beginning.
“The portables are not bad at all. It’s a little better than the old labs,” said Wallace.
Students, like sophomore Leena Ritchel, also do not find the portables that horrible.
“I miss the short walk but it’s not too bad in here. The buildings (Adams and Butterfield) weren’t in the best position,” said Ritchel.
During the cleaning-out stage in Adams and Butterfield, asbestos and other hazardous materials had to be removed before construction.
If the asbestos is friable, it can be harmful to humans if inhaled or ingested.
The two most harmful things that can happen to a person who inhales or ingests asbestos are acquiring malignant mesothelioma or asbestos lung cancer. That is why if there is any sign of asbestos it must be removed immediately and with careful protection.
James Draper, special projects liaison and director of purchasing and contract services, explains that with every construction site of old buildings turn up “oddities” and since Adams was built in 1969 and Butterfield was built in 1926, and added on in the 1960s, there was a great chance of hazardous waste.
The TDS Center will open in August ready for eager students to enter its energy efficient and green atmosphere holding better technology and labs for both students and teachers to appreciate.
