The second anniversary of Relay For Life at the Keene State College campus happened on April 8, but this year the KSC community raised more than last and more individuals participated.
Almost $17,000 was raised by KSC organizations such as the Social Activities Council and others, members of the American Cancer Society, and the Keene community.
The American Cancer Society-Relay For Life is the largest volunteer health organization in the world, according to KSC sophomore and chair of Relay For Life, Becca Lazinsk.
Relay For Life lasted from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m on April 9. During the 12 hours the participants walked the track and did numerous relay activities.

Local businesses in the Keene area donated money to the event such as Athens, Fritz, and Kristin’s Bistro and Bakery.
KSC’s Spaulding Gymnasium was covered in posters by the 33 different teams by 7 p.m. Some posters said, “Celebrate, Remember.” Snacks for sale, a complimentary popcorn machine, and balloons added to the event. Sleeping bags and blankets were scattered near the bleachers and students were enthusiastic about staying up and walking around the track of the gym to support the cause.
“I helped out last year and this year there is a huge difference,” sophomore Lorin Dupuis said.
Students were in teams of 15 or fewer to keep up the relaying through the night into the morning. Some teams wore t-shirts with the slogan “Cancer Sucks.” According to Lazinsk, t-shirt sales raised $2,000.
The gymnasium held the 281 individuals helping the fight against cancer. During the relay those individuals who wore purple and had sashes that said “Survivor” were cancer survivors.
The event coordinator, Donna Cardenas, said she came to the event to help out with registering the survivors.
“Seven cancer survivors are here and signed up,” Cardenas said.
“It helps out a lot and it’s important that people know and help the cause,” cancer survivor and KSC sophomore Christy Nguyen said.
Nguyen said this year it is her first year and she is very happy to attend.
Captain of PSI U Delta NU, Cara Bedore said her team raised over $1,500 for the American Cancer Society.
“It’s bigger and better this year. I will be staying until 8 a.m.,” Bedore said.
The night started off with an opening ceremony where the chair of the event, Lazinsk, made introductory remarks and gave thanks to KSC Community Service Coordinator, Mary McEntee.
“Families, friends, and co-workers all came together to put an end to cancer,” Lazinsk said. “Joining three-and-a-half-million organizations worldwide.”
Colin Daly, student body vice president, gave a speech and said the event proves KSC’s community status.
“The students who are out here tonight lead the way for others,” Daly said.
First the seven survivors began the walk around the track and the students and community members cheered them on. Then everyone joined in on the walk for 12 hours taking turns within their respected teams.
Lazinsk said she has been a part of Relay For Life since fifth grade and said it became her passion when she lost her mother to cancer in 2004.
“This is where my heart lies,” Lazinsk said.
Lazinsk was busy running back and forth helping with speakers, greeting people, and making sure the relay was progressing smoothly. She did it all with ease and a smile across her face.
“Nothing makes me happier than to see this; it makes me so proud of this campus and I am happy I chose to attend Keene State,” Lazinsk said.
