With an increasingly diversified globe, blurred lines, melted pot, or whatever winking tag line otherwise assigned to narrowing cultural proximities, racial profiling has propelled itself to the forefront of American equality debates. This fall’s Arizona immigration controversy is a direct testament to that fact, revealing the constitutional contradictions of law making that, by its nature, targets a certain audience. Just as the Arizona immigration legislature isn’t an exhaustive representation of racial profiling, however, neither is racial profiling an exhaustive example of profiling itself. Social profiling (profiling based on social characterization) is an equally serious, though less widely recognized, issue and is unfortunately alive and well at Keene State College.

Social profiling, of course, takes place quite commonly, and not always maliciously, in student friend sets and social circles across campus; hipster this, jock that, we all know the commentaries and they needn’t be reiterated. What is more disturbing, however, is that Keene State College has, if not intentionally, then at the very least backhandedly, begun to perpetuate the very social profiles they should, and ultimately have, attempted to denounce.
Take for instance this spring’s recent Equalogy play “One Night.” Fundamentally a rape awareness presentation, the play is required for all spring athletes and, in its intentions, seems noble enough. The social profiling issue arises, however, when one acknowledges the fact that only athletes are required to attend the event. This requirement, combined with the sexually aggressive stigma owned by college athletes (remember the Duke lacrosse accusations from a few years back?), should lead us all to ask, is KSC socially profiling its athletes and, therefore, its students? The answer, unfortunately, seems to be yes.
Now this isn’t meant to suggest that KSC students are being under-educated on the dangers of sexual violence, with “No Zebras, No Excuses” becoming a central figure in New Student Orientation’s annual program buffet, amid a variety of other programs, but the requirements are inherently flawed. By requiring athletes, and no other campus demographic, to attend sexual violence presentations, KSC is saying, in hushed tones, that they believe our athletes are more likely to commit acts of sexual assault and rape. In the interest of across the board social equality, every educational and social demographic at KSC should be subjected to the same programs and requirements, as much as some may despise the demands. In the meantime, though, KSC needs to further consider the social connotations of their actions, making quite sure, in every way, that no particular group is indirectly indicted by their very own stereotype.

Yeah, funny how the Chicagoist poster and I came to the same conclusion at the same time. The Cubs can win every game for the rest of the seasons. The Cub fan still cant make the connection between the words blanco and white.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Hello, I think your site might be having browser compatibility issues. When I look at your blog site in Opera, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, excellent blog!
Flash Games
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
