Afro-Cuban musical powerhouse Mango Blue showed the fruits of their labor this past Wednesday night at the Redfern Arts Center’s Main Theatre.
With members hailing from all over the Latin world and the United States, Mango Blue has the ability to draw upon a variety of contemporary and classical influences. Alex Alvear, the leader and bassist for Mango Blue, has been playing and recording Latin music for over 26 years.
Born in Quito, Ecuador, Alvear had been exposed to Latin music at an early age, originally playing piano and bass. After being raised in Puerto Rico, Alvear traveled to the United States to attend the prestigious Berklee School of Music. Alvear quickly found himself arranging classic Latin tunes for big bands and small combos alike, and in 1996 formed Mango Blue.
Since then, he and his group have traveled the world playing from large outdoor festivals to small jazz clubs, dazzling audiences with their incredible musicianship and ability to easily nail the difficult Latin rhythms that they are known for.
Mango Blue kicked off the evening’s fiesta with a solo percussion performance by the group’s congo master, Ernesto Diaz.
As his fingers flew across the skin hides of the conga drums in front of him, the remaining six members of Alvear’s band filed in from the back of the theatre, playing indigenous South American instruments and chanting Alvear’s original arrangement of the beautiful Santeria tune, “Ogun.” (Santeria is a tribal religion with roots in Western Africa and Caribbean islands).

Highlights of this first tune include great interplay between Alvear and the group tenor saxophonist, Nir Naaman. The second song, an original titled “Sombras,” or “Shadows,” was performed next. Alvear called this “Ecuadorian Blues.”
The song began in a mournful and somber fashion, with Alvear’s chanting solely accompanied by the drummer’s behind him. The song quickly changed gears and grooves as the rest of the band joined in, and the keyboard stylings of Rebecca Cline effortlessly and gracefully danced around the concrete foundation provided by Alvear’s band.
The third song in the set, “Decimas,” is another original tune written by Alvear in the style of Puerto Rican soul music. This song had a very laid-back groove to it, with Alvear dropping funky bass bombs between each verse, much to the delight of the audience and his fellow band mates. The solo section contained another keyboard solo by Rebecca Cline and another Tenor Sax solo by Nir Naamann.
“Ernestico” was the fourth song in the set, another original written by Alvear and his band in the style of Colombian dance music, currently taking the Latin World by storm.
This song had a very complex rhythmic pattern, with every percussionist in the band playing a different rhythmic figure.
This song in particular showcased the abilities and extreme technicality of the man behind the drum set, Eric Doob.
He seemed to know every change and section of the whole set like the back of his hand, and provided a solid heartbeat so the band could thrive.
An additional congo solo by Diaz complimented the tune quite nicely.
“We’d like to slow things down a bit,” Alvear said to the audience. He then introduced the fifth song of the set, “Algun dia,” or “Someday.”
Alvear described this song as the band’s “first attempt at a poppy love song.”
This song followed a very similar structure to that of an American pop song, but brought a Latin element that made it entirely unique.
The horns played the melody in unison as Alvear sang the lyrics, complimenting each other beautifully. The song featured a tenor sax solo by Naaman.
“If you feel like dancing, texting, or taking pictures, please be our most welcome guest,” Alvear stated to the audience before introducing the sixth song of the evening, “Love is here.”
This song had a straight cha-cha feel with reggae undertones; two very different grooves that the band brought together seamlessly.
Displaying his proficiency with both the music and language of several different ethnicities, this was the first tune with English lyrics.
The audience didn’t seem to mind, however; the band still delivered what Alvear likes to call, “a salad bowl of different genres.” This song featured a keyboard solo by Rebecca Cline and an alto sax solo by Jared Sims.
“Babula Ande” was the next song of the set. “This song is inspired by Afro-Cuban religious music, and is very special to me, reminding me of home and the social injustices I saw when I returned to Puerto Rico.” A highlight of this tune was the great interplay between Alvear’s bass and the keyboard work of Cline, complimenting each other’s playing wonderfully.
“La Busqueda,” or “The Quest,” was the next song of the evening. Alvear described this as a “funky salsa,” and Mango Blue certainly didn’t disappoint with this statement.
“This song was written about looking for something, because we’re all looking for something in the life,” Alvear continued. The playing on this tune was incendiary, with incredible rhythmic interplay between the timbale work of Karina Colis and the congo virtuosity of Ernesto Diaz.
“Plena Blue” was the ninth song of the evening, a tradition Spanish ballad arranged by Mango Blue into a funky dance party number.
With the crimson lighting provided by Jeremy Robage of the Redfern Arts Center reinforcing the fact that the playing on this song was red-hot.
The perma-grins on the faces of every member as they stoked the sonic fire of this song only confirms this.
The final song of the evening was “Amor y Energia,” or “Love and Energy.” “I wrote this song in dedication to my children,” Alvear told the audience.
The song attempted to express the feeling of longing, a task easily accomplished by the controlled ferocity of Alvear and his band.

This song was a testament to each musician’s fluidity and ability to effortlessly shift between many different genres and rhythmic grooves with quite ease.
