I won’t say it was the worst two hours of my life, but what I saw in “Burlesque” this past weekend can’t be unseen, and it is a tragedy.
Starring Cher and one of the worst uses of a musician-turned-actor, Christina Aguilera, the film was horrible on more than one level.
Between Aguilera’s high-pitched, annoying giggles and flirtations with some random guy wearing eyeliner working at a club, and her inability to even pretend she’s the starry-eyed blonde girl trying to make it big in L.A., “Burlesque” was just a vehicle for Aguilera to belt out songs.
Though she’s a fantastic singer (who just flubs the National Anthem on occasion on one of the largest viewed television events this year), the girl can’t act. Despite this, musicians who decide to grace the silver screen aren’t all hopeless. Here’s a few musician-turned-actors who actually got it right.
He may not be a musician first (he was a comedian), but Jamie Foxx’s performance in “Ray” should not be overlooked on this list.
The man didn’t just act in this biopic of the legendary Ray Charles, Foxx breathed life into the character and gave one of the most authentic performances I’ve seen in a biopic.
Down to the mannerisms, the singing, everything, Foxx gave it his all in this film and electrified the screen in a way we hadn’t seen him do before. Foxx certainly deserved an Oscar that year.
This one may be a cheap one. Marky Mark himself, Mark Wahlberg, went from being the white boy from Dorchester who rapped in the early ‘90s to the guy who gave the awesome, aggressively hostile performance as Staff Sergeant Dignam in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed.”
There’s plenty of great things to say about this film, but Wahlberg set every scene he was in on fire. Not that he’s one of the greatest American actors working today, but his performance in the film needs some serious recognition. Dignam was a spitfire in the film, cursing, yelling, and using extreme force as a hotheaded police officer working to find the rat in the Boston Police Department.
No list would really be complete without Will Smith. Has he had a performance worthy of an Oscar? He came pretty close with “Pursuit of Happyness,” but it’s undeniable the man is close to creating a monopoly on the entertainment business.
He was first the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” on television, and he broke out onto the music scene with his squeaky clean raps like “Miami,” but the man has proven that he can act. In films like “I Robot,” “I Am Legend,” “Independence Day,” “Men in Black,” “Hancock,” and “Bad Boys,” Smith has proven to be one of the most bankable box office stars in the industry.
Last but not least, the diva herself, Cher, gets the top spot. The one-woman powerhouse has an Oscar and several Golden Globe nominations. 1987’s “Moonstruck” is one of the most widely appealing comedies. Cher is funny, energetic, and just entertaining to watch on screen. Even Nicolas Cage can’t bring Cher down in this film, and trust me, that is a feat of epic proportions.
In fact, the diva herself probably made Cage realize he needed to step his game up, because the charming energy the two give off in this film is worth the viewing. This is one of the best examples of one of the best musicians-turned-actors ever put on screen. If she hadn’t been shoved offstage so much in “Burlesque,” maybe the real star of the film would have been allowed to shine.
