As students prepared for the much-awaited annual weekend off, the Student Center lawn at Keene State College was filled with students enjoying the warm weather of the afternoon of Friday, April 15, while Spring Weekend 2011 began.

The weekend’s theme, “It’s a Fiasco!”, inspired by Saturday night’s musical guests Lupe Fiasco and Sam Adams, began to spread across campus as students waited in line for, and later wore, their free t-shirts, provided by the Social Activities Council.

“The concert will be a lot of fun,” sophomore Katie Marsh said Friday afternoon after getting her shirt.

Marsh and her friend sophomore Ashley Clarke agreed that the bouncy houses set up outside the Student Center were a nice touch this year.

In addition to the bouncy houses and inflatable slides available to students, a DJ played music all afternoon and played games with the crowd, giving away WKNH hats, while SAC members passed out sodas to the crowd. Students also lined up to plant their own mini cacti and get henna tattoos. All events were free of charge.

“People seemed generally interested to do everything,” junior Julie Lessard, SAC’s events coordinator said, adding that people waited in line for nearly four hours for henna tattoos.

Sophomore Ryan Glick was just happy to see everyone coming together for a campus-wide event.

“Everyone’s getting outside. Winter’s over,” Glick said. “I wish it was a little warmer,” he added.

Coordinator of Student Activities Jen Ferrell was pleased with the student turnout early in the afternoon, and had no concerns about attendance to the concert.

“People are sticking around,” Ferrell said.

Freshman Eric Grady, SAC’s coordinator for security during the event, thought that the weekend went well, considering its record-breaking size.

“It was the biggest concert and production Keene State has ever had,” Grady said. “Everyone had a fun and safe time at all the spring weekend events.”

On Friday evening, comedian Hal Sparks performed in a completely filled Mabel Brown Room, livening up the crowd with his jokes and dinosaur impressions.

“He was so funny because he was relatable,” freshman Christina Anderson said. “He took common occurrences and made them seem so ridiculous. It was just a really good time.”

By the end of Friday’s festivities, the fiasco had begun and KSC was prepared for Saturday night’s sold-out concert.
