After coming back from winter break, WKNH is preparing for a busy spring semester that will commemorate the station’s 55th anniversary.
According to senior and WKNH General Manager Patrick Garcia, the station is already beginning preparations for its annual Solar Fest event. WKNH brought the event back last year after it ended due to COVID-19.
“I’m excited to now be leading that effort,” Garcia said. “Last year I was co-organizing it, and this year I’m the one that’s actually organizing it.”
Garcia also said the station has collaborated with the Monadnock Humane Society, the Make a Wish Club and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity.
Garcia said that he loves the community he’s found within WKNH.
“It’s really cool working in a space within a school because people come and go,” he said. “Which is great because I get to see so many awesome new faces, but at the same time, I also have to say goodbye to a lot of people that I love hanging out with.”
Assistant General Manager and sophomore Sean Cattigan also shared his excitement for Solar Fest.
“Solar Fest would be our big magnum opus of the year,” Cattigan said. “[It’s] an all-day event completely outside with many different performers switching in through the day, so that’s something that takes so much coordination and build-up and money, but that’s definitely something we’re all looking forward to the most.”
Cattigan said that he enjoys the freedom WKNH provides.
“It’s probably one of, if not the most free club you can be in,” he said. “You come in and you can do pretty much anything you want in regards to having a radio show, or you just play any type of music you want or have a podcast.”
“I think there’s so many different opportunities for people to get involved,” he added.
According to senior and Public Relations Coordinator Katie Duggan, the station will also be receiving a fresh look for its anniversary.
“In the next couple of weeks, I’m going to start working on a vintage rebrand for the station,” Duggan said. “With a new logo, hopefully some merch and fun stuff like that just to celebrate how long we’ve been around.”
“I’m really excited to get to be behind that and everyone will get to see my work when I end up doing that,” she added.
Duggan said that she has also been working on the station’s collaboration with the Monadnock Human Society.
“I was communicating with their social media intern, and with the help of our production director [senior Tyler Desjardins], we put together a series of PSAs to be played on our station that talks about adoption and how to help out the pets at the Humane Society, which is really fun,” she said.
Duggan said a part of the station she enjoys is doing her multiple radio shows.
“It’s just a fun outlet to get to come in every week and share your music and either do it by yourself and just enjoy the music on your own, or share it with friends,” she said.
