Intramural sports are an opportunity for students, especially those not involved in varsity sports, to participate in athletic competitions. Options include basketball, flag football, wiffleball and so much more. All sports can be found online at IMleagues.com.

While the basketball season has come to a close, wiffleball and volleyball seasons have begun. Students of all ages and levels have been battling it out on the court for the last few weeks. The post-season tournament was held after spring break. The tournament is set up in a bracket style like March Madness. Each team’s records seeded them in the tournament and a champion was crowned on March 12, at 7:10 p.m.

The league allows teams to recruit anyone they want to play. The only stipulation is that each team is allowed a maximum of two former intercollegiate players. According to the league rules, “A player is considered a former intercollegiate player for the academic year in which they last appear on a roster. Current intercollegiate basketball players, on team during the spring semester, are not eligible.” Additionally, each team is allowed to create its own team name, which adds some fun to the competition.

Students use intramural sports for a multitude of reasons. Sophomore Elijah Ryan said he “plays in the rec and said, ‘Why not play with my friends?’”. Ryan mentioned his favorite part is seeing his team do well. “It’s satisfying seeing other people succeed, it is the best part.” First-year Luke Belisle said he plays basketball to converse with friends and “have a good time with [his] boys.”

First-year Giuseppe DeNucce-Simms said, “[Intramurals] gives me a chance to play a sport that I enjoy without playing with such high commitment.” Simms highlighted the aspect of fun, “it doesn’t really change how my mental state is win or loss.”

Additionally, many athletes use intramurals to stay active, especially during the winter when everyone is stuck inside. Some leagues allow for co-rec teams. Teams include both women and men on the team.

For basketball, the league rules include “teams must have men and women on the team with a minimum of two of each gender on the court at all times per team.”
