As midterm exams came to a close, students were asked about their favorite places to study.

According to a study from Northlake Behavioral Health System, “Minimizing distractions like turning off notifications or finding a quiet study space helps maintain concentration and prevent time wastage.”

Every Monday or Tuesday during the semester, there is a study night in the Mason Library room 104 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

“We have a math tutor, a writing tutor and every week we have math and writing tutors that rotate. We provide very specific tutoring stuff, and we have a peer mentor, and he is here to be available for things that come up related to student life and student affairs,” said Mark Schmidl-Gagne, a TRIO advisor with the Aspire program.

“Study night has been going on since spring of 2014. There have been 271 study nights as of the close of last fall semester, 4,285 students have attended,” continued Schmidl-Gagne.

Schmidl-Gagne asked students at study night where the best place to study is, and students responded with the library as it eliminates distractions and there is comfortable seating.

Some students said they prefer different spots as they feel the most comfortable and productive in those spots as opposed to others.

Many students said they prefer their room as the best study location.

“I don’t like to study outside of my room. I feel like I get distracted when I am outside, and there are so many things I could do. Even if I am at the library, I hear the doors open and I people-watch which stops me from what I am doing so I would rather study in my room,” said sophomore Azzurra Marongiu.

“I do my homework in my room. I don’t usually have lots of tests so I don’t study much but if I have homework I find I focus best in my room,” said junior Anna White.

Other students frequent the library to study.

“My room and the library are the best places to study. They both are quiet spaces where I can focus and there are not many interruptions,” said junior Molly Wimette.

“I usually study in my room or the library because those spots are quiet,” said junior Stephen Grogan.

One student said she prefers the student center to study.

“My favorite place to study is the Mountain View Room on the third floor in the student center. It’s bright and relaxing in there,” said junior Hanna Atlee.
