The Keene State Women’s Basketball team lost this weekend to the University of Southern Maine, 54-47.

The Owls were led by firstyear Brynn Rautiola who scored 23 points and five three-pointers. USM took the lead in the first quarter and extended it into the next quarter as well, going into the locker room at halftime leading 27-18. The Huskies continued to control the game in the third quarter, stretching the lead out to 52-29. In the fourth and final quarter, Keene State finally started to show some life.

Three three-pointers from Rautiola and a pair of made free throws by sophomore Valerie Luizzi cut the lead down to just 10. A late layup and ensuing free throw by Luizzi got the Owls within seven with just under two minutes to go. Huskies turnovers (34 in total) continued giving Keene opportunities to chip away at the lead. This would be as close as the Owls would get, falling by the final score of 54-47. Keene State shot 26.3% from the field and 22.7% from three-point range. The team is now 2-11 against USM since 2017.

The team will wrap up the semester with a game against Maine Maritime on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.
