The Keene State men’s soccer season came to a close this past Thursday as they fell to the Western Connecticut State University Wolves. The Owls hosted the Huskies in a matchup in the Little East Conference semi – final where they fell 3-1.
Western Connecticut started the game flying from the opening kickoff, tallying five shots on net in the first five minutes. The sixth minute saw them finally break through after scoring on a penalty kick. The Owls answered in the 21st minute. Fifth year midfielder Declan Coughlin drew a penalty in the Wolves’ box and made no mistake with the chance. Western Connecticut continued to pepper junior goalkeeper Regan Racicot, who stood tall the rest of the half, stopping 11 of 12 shots faced.
The Wolves continued their control of the game in the second half. Goals in the 56th and 59th minutes gave them a 3-1 lead with 30 minutes remaining. The Owls fought hard until the end, posting five shots of their own in the half. In the end, it was not enough, as Western Connecticut held strong defensively to take the win and advanced to the LEC Championship game against UMass Boston where they won 1-0 to capture the title.
Keene State finished the season with a record of 9-6-2 and second place in the regular season LEC standings.
