Keene State Men’s Lacrosse put down the University of Southern Maine (USM) Huskies 19-3 in a Little East Conference (LEC) match at home on Saturday, March 28. The win extended a three-game streak by one more game, coming after the Owls beat Norwich University 17-9. The Huskies entered on a three-game losing streak, dropping their last contest 7-12 to Thomas College.
The Owls opened the contest strongly, with a pair of early goals from junior midfielder Nicholas McNulty and senior attacker Dylan Seymour, McNulty’s goal coming down-man. USM ended the first quarter with its own unassisted goal, putting one past senior goaltender Andrew Weigand to bring the score within one. Weigand saved four and allowed three goals in his time between the pipes to earn the win.
USM’s hope was short-lived, however, and Keene State fired off six unanswered goals in the second quarter. Junior midfielder Jake Dubiel scored only 45 seconds into the quarter, followed 30 seconds later by junior defender Ty Cougler scoring his own. Seymour registered his second goal of the game three minutes in, followed by fifth-year midfielder Ben Tukey, sophomore attacker Adam Scala and senior attacker Jack Ansart all scoring.
USM potted another two to open the third quarter, the latter a man-up goal, to bring the score to 8-3. Keene State answered with seven unanswered through the end of the third. Ansart and Tukey both notched their second goals of the day, followed by senior midfielder Cole Ricardi. Dubiel and sophomore attacker Caleb White scored back-to-back on the man advantage. Sophomore attacker Ethan Palma scored with three minutes left, quickly followed by Seymour completing his hat trick and scoring a third on the day.
The Owls kept the foot on the gas through the fourth quarter, scoring another four. Junior attacker Nick Sullivan scored twice, sandwiching a goal from Dubiel that completed the second Owl hat trick of the day. With less than a minute remaining, junior attacker Henry Frechette scored his first goal of the season to cap off the dominant win.
The Owls outshot the Huskies 70-13. The 16-goal differential was the Owls’ widest margin of victory so far in the season, topping the 22-10 shootout against Centenary College. Keene State extended its win streak against the Huskies to 25 games dating back to 2002.
With the victory, Keene State moves on to 6-3, remaining undefeated at 2-0 in the LEC. The Owls are next in action against Massachusetts Maritime Academy, facing off against the Buccaneers on Saturday, April 4, for another LEC matchup.
