Keene State’s Baseball team played at home for the first time this season in a Sunday doubleheader against UMass Boston. The Owls have a 7-10 record on the season and are coming off a dominant 19-1 over Springfield earlier in the week.
The first inning didn’t see much action, but the bottom of the second is when everything kicked off. Sophomore outfielder Mitchell Coffey put the first runs on the board, followed by fellow sophomore outfielder Domminic Tagliaferro to put KSC up by two. The bottom of the fourth saw another three runs added to the board. Senior catcher Evan Cali brought the score to three, another score by Coffey to four and senior infielder Evan McCue to make it five.
The fifth couldn’t have gone any worse for the Owls. They were unable to score and allowed five runs by UMass Boston to tie the game. They responded with six more in the following inning, but couldn’t put up more than two for the rest of the game. The seventh and ninth innings saw a combined eight runs from UMass Boston to eventually win the game 15-13, five of those coming in the ninth alone.
The rematch later in the day saw the Owls get their revenge. Keene State held UMass Boston to only two runs the entire game and kept its foot on the gas for its entirety. Cali led the team in runs. The Owls’ only innings where they did not score were in the sixth and seventh, and they managed to prevent UMass Boston from mounting any type of comeback this time. The game concluded with the eighth 11-2.
Keene State’s record moves to 8-10 on the season and 3-1 within the conference. The team’s next game will be at home on Thursday, April 2, against Westfield State before taking on Plymouth State University for a Saturday doubleheader.
