On Monday, Dec. 1, at 7:38 p.m., Keene State students and faculty received a notification courtesy of the KSC’s Owl Alert system, which was likely music to the ears of commuters and dormers alike.
“Due to weather conditions, Keene State College will provide limited services with curtailed operations all day on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025. In-person class meetings scheduled for Tuesday will not be held,” according to the Owl Alert message.
Snow days have long been revered as a blessing to students from the elementary to the collegiate. The first snow day of a semester is often considered a beloved winter tradition, on par with the season’s first snow angel or opening day at the local skiing area. For college students, a snow day can often provide a necessary chance to decompress and relax during a time traditionally marked by high pressure deadlines and the chaos of final exam season.
The Equinox asked Keene State students about what their personal, perfect snow day looks like, and how they like to spend the day.
For junior Brian Van de Loecht, a perfect snow day can be indoors or outdoors, as long as he is with friends.
“I like to hangout with my friends in my room, so we all get together and play games and have fun. If we want to go outside, we will do that and have some fun playing with the snow,” said Van de Loecht.
Van de Loecht said he enjoyed spending the recent snow day with his friends.
“It was a fun snow day, and we definitely needed it. Most of us had to get through some work, but besides that we all hung out and played some games together,” said Van de Loecht.
Junior Giovanni Iob enjoyed the snow day and said it offered a well needed break from the pressures of an ending semester.
“I think that it was a pretty good day, because we are all in a week where we have finals. It gave us all a break, the chance to take a step back and do our work, while also relaxing at the same time,” said Iob.
According to sophomore Sophia Merenda, her perfect snow day revolves around a cozy day indoors.
“For me, it would be being snuggled up in my bed instead of shovelling my car out. I will probably be having a ginger bread cookie, and catching up on some sleep,” said Merenda.
Senior Alissa Arnold echoed Merenda’s appreciation for a cozy snow day at home and said that she uses the time to relax and catch up on her favorite shows.
“I like to watch crime shows while watching the snow fall and having a cup of hot cocoa. I’ll probably go outside to make some snow angels and then go back to take a shower and warm up,” said Arnold.
According to Arnold, “The Rookie,” ABC’s critically acclaimed police procedural drama starring Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz and Richard T. Jones serves as a comfort show staple during snow days.
“I really like [The Rookie], which is a crime show that really makes me feel better. It was also really nice to sleep in and just have the chance to relax, instead of having to go to the lab I had scheduled for the day,” said Arnold.
Sophomore Thomas Lambert and his friends braved the cold to spend their day off playing a friendly game of football in the snow.
“On Tuesday we literally just played football, which was so much fun. It was wonderful, and it was still snowing at the time so my hands were completely frozen afterwards, but it was so worth it,” said Lambert.
“That was actually part of the fun, believe it or not,” added Lambert.
Lambert said that he has not started to watch holiday movies, but is hoping to plan a holiday movie night with friends during the next snow day.
“I have not watched a Christmas movie yet this year, but we were talking about watching [Elf]. It is a great movie, incredibly funny, and I would love to get some friends together to watch either that or [Home Alone], which is another one of my favorites,” said Lambert.
