With the year starting up, departments around campus are beginning to announce their schedules and lineups for the year. In line with this, the college’s theatre and dance program has recently released its schedule for the academic year.
There are four faculty productions planned for this year, ranging from student showcases to main stage productions. One event that is planned for this fall is a dance film called “Dances on Film,” which will be joined by the creator, Tori Lawrence, as a guest artist. This event will be held in the Redfern Arts Center Main Theatre on October 24 and 25.
“We will be having a screening on the main stage with the screen coming down, and we will also have ten dancers dancing live in collaboration and interaction with the film, so we’re super pumped about that,” theatre coordinator and Professor Kirstin O’Brien explained.
O’Brien also talked about the second show in the lineup, which is a musical by Jason Robert Brown called “The Bridges of Madison County.” The show will be performed from November 19 to 22.
“It is probably our big show of the year, just in terms of size of the cast and the set and that matter,” O’Brien said. “I chose this musical because I wanted a larger cast. Jason Robert Brown is an incredible composer.”
Another annual event in this program is the “Choreography Showcase,” which takes place in the Mabel Brown Room on the second floor of the L.P. Young Student Center and features student work from the research and choreography course taking place this fall, taught by dance coordinator and Professor Cynthia McLaughlin. This showcase will be performed for two nights at the end of the fall semester on December 4 and 5.
“10 students will each spend the full semester working on an original choreographed work,” said McLaughlin. “Then we have a showcase called ‘Choreography Showcase’ held in the Mabel Brown Room where they present their work in a fully produced evening with costumes and lights and everything else”.
Other events listed in the schedule include “The Color of Our Lives,” a play written by Theatre and Dance Professor Céline Perron and the “Evening on Dance” produced by McLaughlin. These events are open to the public, faculty and students. Specific times and locations, as well as tickets, can be found on the KSC website under the Theatre and Dance program section. Tickets can also be purchased at the box office located in the Redfern Arts Center.
