Construction and safety majors attended an internship fair in the Spaulding Gymnasium. 72 businesses tabled in the gym from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 6.
The Safety & Construction Career and Internship Fair happens twice a year, once per semester. The companies are required to submit an application prior to the event, each hoping to find students interested in internship opportunities.
Prior to the event, all safety and construction majors were able to attend the department’s Resumania nights to prepare their resumes when applying for internships. Two Resumania nights were hosted on the Tuesday and Thursday before the fair.
All students in the department had the day off from classes and were required to attend the career and internship fair, said Lito Amit, associate professor of safety and occupational health applied sciences.
“There are 350 students in both departments and 90 percent of them are here. We want the students to get an internship, it’s a very rewarding opportunity,” said Amit.
There are over 300 internships available per fair. Students can travel all over the globe for these internships, including Disney, said safety department chair Brady Keene. These internships provide free transportation and accommodations with living and other expenses. “All internships are paid and typically offer $20-30 an hour,” said Keene.
Behind the different tables was another opportunity for students, free professional headshots for their LinkedIn page. Ethan Davis, a senior, was asked to take headshots as an added experience to the fair. “This career fair is really interesting to me. Things like this are why Keene State can say they have almost 100 percent of students graduate with a job,” said Davis.
First-year Garrett Emery was shadowing Davis while he took headshots to potentially take over once Davis graduates.
Callie Chordas, a sophomore construction safety major, talked about her previous experience last year with an internship.
“Freshman year, I was able to go to Minnesota for an internship. I got to meet crew members and travel to different job sites. This year, I am doing an internship in Tennessee.”
