The Keene State Women’s Basketball team was not able to win against the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, Jan. 25, ending with a score of 47-58.
The first quarter showed promise of the Owls gaining momentum, ending with a close score of 14-11 with the Huskies in the lead.
The score stayed close for most of the quarter, but the Owls were never to get ahead with points. The closest they came to overcoming Southern Maine was around three minutes left, when the score was tied 7-7, but that tie was quickly lost, keeping the Owls at the disadvantage.
Southern Maine scored five out of their 16 shots taken on goal, two of these being three-pointers with an additional two made free throws.
The second quarter was much more detrimental to Keene State, ending the first half with a score of 35-20, putting them far behind the other team.
After those first few minutes, the Huskies continued to score while the Owls only scored a handful of points near the end of the second quarter. They would go into the second half of the game with a 35-20 score, being put at a major disadvantage.
Keene State only scored nine points while Southern Maine only propelled themselves closer to victory by scoring 21 points within the quarter.
Out of the 13 shots the Owls took, they only made four of them, one of which being the three-pointer scored by Bundy out of the six taken outside of the three-point line. The Huskies made nine of their 16 shots. Out of the eight three-pointers they attempted, they made three of them.
This first half dug the Owls into a hole. They only made about 32% of their shots and only made about 17% of their three pointers.
Sophomore Brynn Rautiola scored the most within the first half, contributing five points to the score. Junior Lilly Krysinski and senior Samantha Lee both scored four points as well.
After halftime ended and the third quarter began, Keene State came out with determination to come back and defeat Southern Maine.
Starting off the quarter with two free throws made by first-year Ruby Dasaro, the Owls continued to score, slowly but surely catching up to the Huskies score, ending the third quarter with a 50-38 score.
Throughout the fourth, KSC basketball battled back to bring the game closer. Even though they scored nine points in the fourth quarter, one more than Southern Maine, they ended up losing the game with a score of 47-58.
This is the third loss in a row for the team. The Owls face Plymouth State University for the second time on Wednesday, Jan. 29 on the Panthers’ turf.
