KSC Women’s Ice Hockey snapped a three-game winning streak after the Anna Maria College Amcats pounced to a 5-3 victory on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The first period started off with some offensive promise on the Owls’ side, with KSC players rifling off 12 shots, six of which were saved by Amcat goalkeeper Megan Tegethoff, and six wide of the net.
While the Amcats failed to shoot until just before the 10-minute mark, the team made quick work of the opportunities, ultimately scoring a goal after two saves by the Owls’ goalkeeper first-year Ai Chung.
The latter half of the first period showed the Amcats continuing their offensive momentum, firing off seven shots compared to the Owls’ two following the goal.
The second period began strongly for KSC, with first-year forward Brianna Finke rocketing the puck into the back of the net to tie things up within the first two minutes.
After some back-and-forth with the puck, the Amcats took an opportunity to score after the Owls’ first-year defender Rory Owens was penalized for tripping, beginning a power play.
At the very last second of the power play the Amcats pulled ahead 2-1.
However, the bleeding would only continue for the Owls, as the Amcats scored another goal just four and a half minutes later.
The score was now 3-1 Amcats going into the third period, and KSC needed to do some serious catch-up in order to have a shot at a win.
First-year forward Ava Iantosca did her part in this effort, scoring a goal before the one-minute mark to lower the deficit to just one goal.
However, hopes dimmed once the Amcats started shooting again. Chung saved four out of five shots on goal but a sixth shot was what catapulted Anna Maria College to a 4-2 score.
After the goal, both teams made three shots each to no avail before the Amcats scored their fifth and final goal just after the 12-and-a-half-minute mark.
First-year forward Molly Price scored the Owls’ third and final goal just before the end of the game, ending on a 5-3 loss, the team’s eighth of the season.
The Owls will now head to rival Plymouth State in a February 2 matchup at the Hanaway Rink.
