The Keene State campus has been decorated like a snow globe due to the snowfall that has been occurring over the last few weeks. The snow and ice have covered the entirety of campus, affecting the parking lots and Appian Way.
Some KSC students expressed that the snow and ice covering the walkways made it difficult for them to get to their classes and traverse the campus.
“I think the snow in general is very pretty; however, it is not very pretty when you are face down in it because you fell,” said junior Kate Whitney.
“If they want us to be super involved in campus, it is their responsibility to have groundskeeping up to standards when we are trying to attend classes and other campus events. You would think since we are from New Hampshire they would take proper measures in fixing this,” continued Whitney.
First-year Garrett Emery said, “I believe that our campus needs to plow the sidewalks more. I don’t necessarily think that the snowfall is the issue but the inconsistent plowing of sidewalks is.”
“I like having snow on campus but the plowing is not the best. Other places like Walmart are already fully plowed and Keene State is not fully plowed weeks after a storm. It is not safe because kids can slip. I have almost slipped a few times actually,” said junior Max Argeriou.
“We obviously live in New England, it is expected we are going to get bad winters, so I really feel that not even just Keene State College and the maintenance people but also the town of Keene do not upkeep sidewalks. Walking from my off-campus apartment, the sidewalks are completely covered in snow or it is clear ice. There is no salt, no nothing and it’s awful,” said junior Chloie Brown.
Climate change and the increased prevalence of ice and freezing rain have made it more difficult for the grounds team to clear walkways, according to previous reporting by The Equinox.
It is only February and according to Almanac Weather’s 60-Day Extended Weather Forecast for Keene, NH, there will be a prediction of more snow and cold temperatures in the next week as well as the first week of March.
