One of the main attractions at the Night Owl Café (NOC), its popcorn machine, has been broken for the past week.
On average 70 to 80 students a night go to the NOC to enjoy some free popcorn and drinks while in the company of others. The Cafe is open from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. With the popcorn machine being broken, fewer students have been deciding to go and spend time at the NOC.
Morgan Massaro, a NOC employee, said, “I think it’s been broken for about a week, maybe more. I just came back from break and it was like this.”
Alissa Arnold, the NOC’s manager, stated, “I’d prefer to have popcorn but these machines are expensive. I guess it’s a simple task and I would like to have the popcorn machine to do more stuff but it’s okay because I talk to customers and stock drinks.”
Jessica Gagne Cloutier, director of student involvement, commented on getting the machine repaired.
“I am currently working with the supplier to determine if we can order the broken part, as we were not able to make a local repair,” said Gagne Cloutier.
Many KSC students were upset at the temporary loss of the popcorn machine.
Junior Hunter Perkins stated, “I desperately want popcorn and it’s the highlight of my day, when I saw it was broken I was more devastated.”
Perkins continued, “The free beverages are what adds the cherry on top, I miss socializing with the workers over the popcorn.”
“[It] makes me sad, not many people come to the Night Owl Café anymore,” said first-year Emmett Hartford.
“I’m personally a little outraged. It’s just hard to believe because the NOC is supposed to keep up with its name,” said first-year Dillon Lawrie. “Can anything at this school go right?”
“It’s my first time coming up here, I heard it’s a nice chill spot and I speak for myself and other people and people would like it not to be broken,” said first-year Ryan Fillion.
First-year Savanna Fisher said, “My friends and I made a tradition out of it and the different flavors were nice, my go-to flavor is kettle corn.”
Junior Karel Wolterbeek said, “I think it’s pretty unfortunate and I’m glad there are still sodas up there. I’d say I usually go twice a week and go with a friend after going to the dining hall or Lloyd’s.”
