The men’s hockey team won their third game in a row on Sunday, Dec. 8, with a clean sweep win against Fitchburg State with a final score of 4-0.
They won their game the previous night against Saint Michael’s with a closer score of 4-3. This puts the Owls with a 5-5-1 record.
The first period ended with no points for either team, but was certainly eventful. Keene State College managed to take six shots on goal while Fitchburg managed 14.
The shots from the Owls’ opponents seemed to be back-to-back in parts of the game, but first-year goalkeeper Ben Skelton kept up his game and didn’t let a single shot into the net.
Fitchburg had one power play in the first period, but it did not help them succeed, as it led to no shots being taken on goal.
The second period did not end scoreless, as the Owls scored their first goal toward the end of the period to make the score 1-0. Sophomore Marcus Chrisafideis made the shot, assisted by first-years Chase Carney and Peter Unger.
This shot was the only one scored out of the 13 taken by the Owls. The Falcons took eight shots, but none allowed them to tie the game.
The Owls had two power plays in the second period while Fitchburg only had one. None of them gave either of the teams points.
The Owls used the lead they had gained in the second period as motivation and scored three more goals in the third period. The first was made 8:20 into the period by Chrisafideis and assisted by Carney.
Carney scored the next goal at 15:40, assisted by senior Corey Tumenas and first-year Sean Gray. Even though the Owls already had a massive lead, sophomore Filip Tjärnhell scored another goal at 17:55, assisted by first-year Sean Hoffman.
This closed the game at a 4-0 score. Throughout the contest, Fitchburg took 29 shots on goal while Keene State managed 28.
Skelton ended the game with 29 saves, making his season total 232 and landing his save percentage at .913 for the season.
The Owls won 28 faceoffs during the game. Carney had 11 wins, first-year Thor Hansen and junior John Belisle won eight and first-year Michael Boschetto won one.
Fitchburg ended the game with 25 faceoffs won, their biggest contributor being #23 junior Nicholas Weber with eight faceoff wins.
After three wins in a row, the Owls have a break for winter vacation. Their next game takes place against the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Jan. 3, 2025 away from their home rink.
