Behind KSC Field Hockey’s perfect record this season are the Owls who put in the hard work, one being sophomore Grace Seabury.
“She has a lot of natural talent in field hockey, which is something that can benefit a player,” said senior Captain Irini Stefanakos. “Aside from natural skills, she is always asking questions and wanting to improve. It shows whenever she makes a mistake or is confused, she is not afraid to ask the coaches, captains or any other players. Grace herself to be the best she possibly can.”
The Keene State Field Hockey team has begun the 2024 season without a loss and are now 9-0.
Seabury has had a more goal-heavy season for herself, already netting five goals. During her first season, Seabury scored only five times as she was a midfielder, a position that can get scoring opportunities but is also required to play in the neutral zone of the field and help on defensive possessions.
Senior Captain Molly Murray said the switch in Seabury’s positions has been a change, and one that has helped the sophomore score more often.
“She has the forward skills and being able to switch from a forward to a midfielder [quickly] is different,” Murray said. “When you lose the ball you are able to get it back and score as opposed to being more defensive- minded.”
During a dominating win over Fitchburg State (9-0) on Saturday, Sept. 14, Seabury contributed a hatrick (three goals). That moment earned Seabury the title of Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week for field hockey.
Seabury feels gaining accolades early on in her collegiate career will add field to her motivation.
“I think it can definitely add to your confidence, and I think it only makes you want to be better,” Seabury said. “We have players on defense or in the back half that don’t get as much attention so it’s a privilege for sure.”
Having already surpassed her previous number of goals in a season, Seabury emphasizes being committed to the game and her
appreciation for her teammates.
“Our team chemistry is really strong, and I think that we have a strong bond. Especially outside of
field hockey, we really seem to click,” said Seabury. “When we are on the field that same bond carries over and it creates such a good atmosphere for games.”
Seabury and her team will move forward to their next game against The University of New England on Saturday, Sept. 28.
