Flute Ensemble performed a recital on Saturday, April 27, in combination with ensemble member Laura Sandman’s junior recital.
Included in the ensemble’s performance were other members of the flute family such as bass flute, alto flute and piccolo.
“You get a full range of sound,” Robin Matathias, director of the performance, said. “It’s a great experience for [the performers]. They might be used to playing in a band, but now they’re responsible for carrying a part. They learn how to listen better.”
First-years Cailyn Gorman and Alannah Bloom received their first experiences with alto flute through the course associated with the ensemble, according to Matathias.
Sandman’s recital directly followed the ensemble performance. Preparation for a junior recital takes the better part of a year, Matathias said.
“We’ve already been talking about literature for the senior recital,” Matathias said.
The two Saturday performances were originally scheduled to be separate, but a sudden case of tendonitis caused Sandman’s recital to be rescheduled.
“I’m honestly glad that I had the extra time to prepare,” Sandman said.
Junior James Slipp, who attended the combined performance, said he was there to see friends perform.“It was fun,” Slipp said. “There were some really fun pieces … It was really energetic and great to listen to.”
