Keene State composition students brought their original pieces to the Redfern Arts Center’s Alumni Recital Hall on Sunday, April 28.
The Keene State Music Department finished their weekend showcase by hosting their annual Student Composer Recital. Music students and faculty collaborated to play through the featured compositions. Each student composer had the opportunity to take the stage and speak about their pieces throughout the performance.
The performance featured pieces from all students who took a composition class this semester, and five students that took private lessons with music professors, according to Dr. Heather Gilligan, composition coordinator for the Music Department.
“From a curricular standpoint, this is the culmination of the semester,” stated Gilligan, “But more importantly, we try to provide opportunities for our composition students to have their pieces recorded, because they need to build up a portfolio.”
First-year and featured student composer Lucas Parhiala said this event is a good place to hear the music that his peers have been producing and examine how their music differs from his own.
Community member Nancy Roby said she liked “to have all this fresh new music and to have all the passion and excitement that these young people have.”
“It brought together all the young minds at Keene State to create various different styles of music,” said first-year Elijah Hashem.
