Better late than never

Prominent roles throughout Keene State College are finally being filled, leading The Equinox editors to wonder why it took so long in the first place.

Several important positions in the college have been left vacant for a while. Many of these positions have been filled, notably the Registrar which has been fulfilled by Laura Provost. It took 15 months to have someone to take the role of the Registrar. During that time, Associate Provost Sue Castriotta took the role of Acting Registrar while also in her other position.

We are left confused as to why it took 15 months to get the role filled. With a super important role such as the Registrar, it is concerning that the college did not have it fulfilled sooner. Castriotta should not have had to take on multiple roles for such a long time. We feel it is unfair and the process of selecting should be changed to prioritize getting people into roles much faster.

We think it is great there are now people within many of the roles that were left empty for so long. We however also realize it should not have taken as long as it did to get these hires in. Also some of the important roles are still left vacant.

The role of the Coordinator of LGBTQ+ Student Support, previously held by Hunter Kirschner, has been empty since the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year. We are left worried as to why it is taking so long to fulfill this role. We would estimate it being a fairly simple role to fill.

Keene State College deserves a Coordinator of LGBTQ+ Student Support. It has been far too long since the school has been without one. It should be a great priority to get the role filled.

We see how great it is that the role of Sustainability Coordinator got filled so fast by Katherine Witte. The role which has been empty since after the Spring 2023 semester has been fulfilled. This is a role many students cared about and it is good to see it once again have someone in the position. It shows that Keene State College can have previously empty roles be taken up fast enough. We believe it should be a higher priority for the school to fill in the currently empty roles in a similarly swift manner.

We at The Equinox want what is best for Keene State College. This means having the roles the school needs be fulfilled as soon as possible. Finding the right people who will do an excellent job filling their role should not be too difficult. Many people are out there who will do the job they need extremely well.

The college needs and deserves to have all of the important positions filled with people who can focus solely on their position. The roles should not be taken up by people who already have a job they are doing.
