On Feb. 12, the Super Bowl will celebrate its fifty-seventh (LVII) iteration with a championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, and the population of Keene State College have a variety of different opinions about it.
This will be the first time in Super Bowl history these two teams will ever face each other.
Each team had its own road to the championship, with the Chiefs last defeating the San Francisco 49ers while the Eagles knocked off the Cincinnati Bengals. The game will be held at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., a venue with a capacity that can reach over 78,000.
Sophomore Katherine Rosen is “going with the Chiefs” and mentioned that she “likes Patrick Mahomes.”
Rosen finds this upcoming game to be particularly interesting due to the fact that “it’s the first Super Bowl where two brothers can play against each other.” Rosen is referring to Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce who will be playing against his brother, Jason Kelce, who is a center for the Eagles. Rosen isn’t the only person rooting for the Chiefs. “Sizzler Josh” is a fellow Kansas City fan. “I hope the Chiefs win because I hate the Eagles,” he said, mentioning that he grew up with a friend who was an “obnoxious” Philadelphia fan. Junior Jack Balboni said he is hoping that the Eagles will pull out the win. “I am a big Eagles guy, I’ve always liked the Eagles,” he said.
Balboni mentioned that he and a group of friends are all placing bets on who they feel will walk away from Glendale with the win and what he thinks the score may turn out to be. Balboni is predicting a total score of 51 points, with the Eagles taking the win. “I’ll have a great time watching no matter what,” he said.
The Super Bowl is much more than just a football game, however. The aspect of the day that sophomore Sophia Brasley is most looking forward to does not even relate to the game itself — the artist performing at the halftime show. “I’m excited for Rihanna, I don’t know who I’d want to perform at the Super Bowl if not her,” she said. Brasley is referring to the Super Bowl’s iconic halftime show, which this year will feature a performance by Rihanna. Brasley is hoping that she’ll perform “S&M” and “FourFiveSeconds,” which she cites as her favorite songs from the Barbadian singer.
Also, the Super Bowl is notorious for being the event where many companies debut their newest marketing campaigns. The commercials viewers watch between plays have become as iconic as the game itself, and senior Andrew Cappello is very excited to see what companies have in store. “It’s gotten to the point where I only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials and the halftime show,” he said. Cappello noted his favorite commercial being “the Doritos’ one where they’re doing an ultrasound” from a 2016 advertisement.
For many students, this Super Bowl will be their first not at home with their families. This is the case for first year student Andrew Sorcinelli, who said that he and his family have a Super Bowl tradition back home. “We do a pickies (snack table) and basically we all just sit around, make the snacks together and watch the game. It’s usually a family thing,” Sorcinelli said, noting that he will instead be watching the big game with friends on campus this time around.
