Dr. Jeff Timmer will be stepping into a new role after two-decades at Keene State
Golf is a unique sport, with varying levels of difficulty, complexity, and competition.
It’s a perfect sport to be played competitively or recreationally. Keene State has been able to do just that with the help of Associate Professor Jeffrey Timmer.
Timmer has been with Keene State for 20 years now in the Human Performance and Movement Science department. Additionally, Timmer has taught a golf course and is currently the advisor for Keene State’s golf course. Timmer has been a faculty athletic representative for 12 years.
During Timmer’s time attending Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, he was active on their golf team for three years. “Some of the best times, you know that I can remember this, it was a really great experience and that’s what I’m hoping to give the students here,” said Timmer. Keene State’s golf club has been active for almost two years with Timmer’s help.
When asked about how Timmer hopes to move forward with the teams, he stated, “Men’s varsity will compete in the Little East Conference (LEC) in a conference championship. The LEC does not currently have a women’s golf at the moment, but the hope is that will happen sooner rather than later. The women’s team will be playing in invitationals, against other Division III schools in New England to qualify for the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association).”
When asked about what’s next, Timmer said, “I think the biggest thing is, is trying to get the word out that Keene State now has men’s and women’s golf. When you start a program, there are no alumni. There is no history. There’s no previous Keene State students that have been golfers, so there is no real connection to Keene State and golf around New England,” said Timmer.
Timmer is the faculty advisor for the golf club on campus, so he has some connections with students of potential interest. Timmer said he has had conversations with students regarding their abilities and possibilities of being on the teams. Timmer said he is still working on the details of what golf tryouts will look like. “We don’t know exactly what it will look like, but we should have a better handle on it by the end of the semester,” said Timmer.
Timmer then took a moment to talk about what the golf club is like. “The club played in three different club tournaments around New England, so they were really active this fall. There are usually about 16 members. We had a few members that would come and go, based on schedules and things like that, but there was a good core group,” said Timmer.
“I’m super excited for the opportunity to coach golf here at Keene State. I’m really looking forward to it, both men’s and women’s. I think that’s pretty exciting. There’s not too many women’s golf teams in the region so I’m hoping that that will draw some attention from the female golfers,” said Timmer.
