On the student center lawn on Tuesday, September 21, students gathered to roast marshmallows together at an event hosted by KSC Pride.
On Tuesday, September 21, KSC Pride hosted a s’mores night on the student center lawn and brought students together.
Marshmallow roasting, music, chalk talk, people playing with a glow stick ball and the reflection of the fire on their smiling faces were a common sight. Expressing the contentment of finally being able to host an in-person event, Hunter Kirschner, Coordinator of LGBTQT Student Support and KSC Pride’s advisor, said, “Today’s event is really aplanatic of the kind of values students own, which is coming together and having fun”.
KSC Pride’s President, Gretchen Moore, added “Students, especially freshmen and LGBTQ community, come to college alone and don’t know right away that there is space for them. So, our club and these events are important to get the word out that you have a space here, you have people that you can connect with and be supported by. Even though this took a lot, it was worth it”.
Even though it was Pride’s second meeting, everybody was welcomed to join in. “There are a lot of students here tonight that wouldn’t necessarily come to KSC Pride meeting and still are able to benefit from the spaces and opportunities that KSC Pride creates”, said Krischner.
Vice President of KSC Pride, Ray Laventure added, “Everyone who wants to join are welcomed in weekly meetings that are on Tuesdays at 8 [p.m.]”
Like how marshmallows were combined with chocolate and graham crackers, that night really combined fun and people together. Sophomore Alice Browne , a music education major, said, “Social events that are in a more open space or outdoors is a really good way to let people know about the clubs. I really felt like this was something I really needed now since the semester started to really pick up.”
First-year student Jamie Cronin. who is a new Pride member, also shared her glee of joining KSC Pride and added, “It’s been so great to have this safe space and sense of community on campus. I love the energy that the group has and can’t wait to get more involved in it!”.
