Welcome Back Week was just what the students needed before a semester full of an intense workload and hours of studying.

What better way to kick off the 2011 school year than a week full of activities thrown by Keene State’s Social Activities Council?

The Lloyd P. Young Student Center was the hot spot to be the week of September 5, 2011, as various activities were thrown to keep the stress level down to a minimum.

“There were activities to do that weren’t academic related,” Julie Lessard, events coordinator for SAC, said.

Students of all years were encouraged to take part in the wide variety of activities that were going on the second week of classes. Since classes were just beginning, students were more available to come together and share some laughs and have a good time.

“It’s a great way for students to get out at the beginning of the semester,” explained President of Social Activities Council, Dayna Coleman.

Since fall semester just returned in session, it didn’t seem that the workload would have piled up, preventing students to enjoy the activities that were planned out.

“Classes haven’t kicked into high gear yet,” Coleman said.

Instead of looking around town for activities, students would be able to come together on campus and partake in the events that SAC was offering the campus community.

“This way students can find something on campus that is just as good as off campus,” Coleman said.

Last semester’s SAC’s Spring Weekend was a big success, and they were hopeful that Welcome Back Week would continue in the same direction.

“Last Spring Weekend was full of attendance for all of the events,” Lessard said.

By continuing with the activities, SAC was hoping that students would learn about the club.

“It gives students an opportunity to get to know who SAC is,” Lessard said.

So where did SAC get their ideas for Welcome Back Week?

“A lot of brainstorming,” explained Lessard. “We looked to see what events other colleges were doing for ideas.”

The SAC staff attended the annual NACA (National Association for Campus Activities) to see where the activities could originate from.

“The conference provided us with a lot of ideas,” Coleman said.

So what activities went on that students were able to partake in?

On Tuesday night, September 6th, comedians graced the stage in the NOC in the Student Center. They prepared for a great show. With popcorn and soda in hand, students were looking forward to a night full of laughs.

“It’s kind of a good way to break the ice,” freshman Chelsea Shirshac saud. “Everybody likes to laugh,” Shirshac continued.

Opener Rick Canavan and head-liner Tony V entertained the crowd of students who seemed to enjoy the show.

“I had a great time,” freshman Brittany Adair said. “They were funny comedians.”

On Thursday, September 8th, laser tag was held outside on the Student Center lawn, from 9:00 PM- 1:00 AM.

This year, the activity was held outdoors, as the event was held inside in the past.

Lessard was hoping that this change would add an extra kick to the event.

“We are having the outdoor version to spice it up a little,” Lessard said.

Students were able to see what was happening, and were able to join in on the fun if they wanted to.

“Having it out in the open gets everybody together,” junior Megan Blanchette, publicity coordinator for SAC, said.

With the music blasting and the outside of the Student Center set up ready for laser tag to begin, students were not only looking to partake in the fun activity, but to be social as well.

“I’m hoping to meet new people,” sophomore James Johnson said.

Due to rain, the bonfire was moved from Wednesday night, September 7, to Friday night, September 9.

Fire pits were set up throughout the lawn of the Student Center as students were able to roast marshmallows and make s’mores as well.

“I think it’s a good way for freshmen to meet new people,” freshman William Lorenzen said.

The whole week seemed to be a success and students were excited to try to activities.

“It shows that a lot of people want to have fun on campus and it gets students interacting with each other,” Lorenzen added.
