Her work ethic was nearly her undoing.
Jodi Ross worked as an accountant for Citigroup(dc) in Tower 7, World Trade Center.
On that bright, cloudless day 10 years ago, she challenged the security guard’s command not to enter the building, right after 9 a.m. right after the first plane hit World Trade Center1 on Sept. 11, 2001.
“One WTC had a huge hole at the top of the building and it seemed to be melting from the fire,” Ross explained. “It also looked to me like it was leaning towards 7 WTC, which was the building I had worked at,” Jodi Ross continued.
But Ross did not seem to care as she needed to get to work.
She was late and all she could think about was getting into her office.
“I was confused, dazed and in shock,” said Ross. “I was thinking that I still had to go to work and started to walk towards 7 WTC,” continued Ross.
That Tuesday morning was just another day in the life of Ross. After she woke up, she made her way to the train station, just as she did every other morning. Only this time, she left in her husband’s vehicle, which prevented her from making her train.
“My car was being repaired and I was having trouble starting my husband’s car,” explained Ross. “I missed my train to Penn Station,” Ross continued.
Ross made the next train and was on her way into the city. The train ride was just like any other day, and she was focusing on getting into work.
She never would have suspected anything was wrong when she got into Penn Station.
It wasn’t until she got out of the subway to make her way to the office that chaos erupted.
“When the subway pulled into the WTC concourse, people were running out of the Concourse screaming,” Ross remembered. “I assumed there was a problem but had no idea what it was until I walked up the steps out of the Subway,” stated Ross.
Little did she know, The Twin Towers had been hit, and the building that she worked in was next to the Twin Towers.
As Ross tried to enter the building, her coworker Steve Hirschberg, was already inside.
“I was so close watching from the 22nd floor of the 7 World Trade Center,” Hirschberg stated.
After the first plane was hit, Hirschberg was told that he shouldn’t worry, and he should continue on with his day.
“We were told by the security guard in our building that a small plane hit the upper floors of the North Tower, and that we should return back to work,” stated Hirschberg
Ross was hoping to join Hirschberg and her other coworkers, despite the building up in flames .
There was a police officer there who instructed Ross to turn around.
“The police officer told me I was not allowed to enter the building and to go to the corner,” Ross said.
Ross did not want to listen as she was determined to get into her office. The officer however, told her it was not safe. Ross gave in and turned around.
When Ross turned around, she noticed that this was serious.
“People just stood at the corner watching the building burn,” explained Ross. “As I turned to go, I heard someone scream that a person just jumped out of the building. I turned to look but did not see anything, and just assumed that I misunderstood what the person said,” continued Ross.
But it was the truth. People were trying everything to escape the Twin Towers, even if it meant taking their own lives.
“I remember a woman in a red dress who jumped, and one couple who jumped out of the window holding hands,” Hirschberg stated. “I felt like I could almost see the expression on their faces,” explained Hirschberg.
All that Hirschberg and Ross could think about was their families, and how they had to return home to them.
“I was in the building trying to escape. My thoughts were ‘I can’t afford to die,’ my wife and three kids need me,” stated Hirschberg.
The vivid sights and sounds will always remain with these Citigroup workers. The impact the attacks had on these individuals was massive. Ten years later and they could still recall events as they were yesterday.
As Ross stated, “The sirens, the sound of the helicopters, people standing around watching the buildings burn and trying to get away from the site, the fear that my kids had every time I left their site.”
