On Tuesday, September 13, 2011, KSC Dining Services and the L.P. Young Student Center hosted the fifth annual Family-Style Dinner for KSC students on Appian Way.
Tables lined the Appian Way sidewalks infront of the Zorn Dining Common, the Student Center, and the Spaulding Gym. Students were served the traditional lasagna and meatballs with cannolis stacked to impressive heights for dessert.
The Family-Style Dinner aims to welcome students back to campus and bring them all together for a quality meal together.
“I live off campus,” junior Ashley Burke said, “so I get to see all of my friends on campus and eat with them.”
Many students attend every year and can’t wait for the dinner. Junior Vanessa Ainsworth even bragged to her coworkers during the day on Tuesday before the event.

“I’ve gone eery year, I think it’s pretty cool,” Ainsworth said, noting that her coworkers were jealous of the dinner.
Students are drawn not only to the camraderie, but also the free food.
“I usually come to the ones they have food at,” senior Joey Pond said of campus events, “especially free food.”
But while students enjoy the menu, some say it clearly can’t compare to food from home.
“My mom’s lasagna is like the best in the world,” senior Dan Lynch said, though he does enjoy the Dining Services’ lasagna.
The Family-Style Dinner began in 2007 according to Rebecca Briggs, the Dining Services’ nutritionist.
“The Family-Style Dinner was started in 2007 as a way to continue the relationship building and sense of community that began earlier that same day during the Involvement Fair, Briggs said.
The idea originally was proposed by the Student Center after seeing a similar dinner event at a conference.
“We figured we could do it here, so we collaborated with Dining Services,” Gino Vallante, the Student Center programs coordinator, said. “After the first year, we connected it with the Involvement Fair.”
Vallante said that in addition to creating a day-long event outside meant to bring students together, having the dinner the night of the Involvement Fair worked logistically, as the tables and chairs were all already outside.
The first year, the Student Center paid for the costs that exceeded what it would normally cost to serve a student dinner. The second and third year, the Centennial Committee sponsored the event and picked up the excess cost in order to open it up to the entire campus, including faculty and staff.
Last year the Vice President of Student Affairs’ office picked up the difference in order to keep the dinner open to the entire KSC community, but this year it was for students only again.
The Student Center, however, did not pick up the additional tab. All of the costs associated with food, including food, preparation, and service, were paid for by Dining Services, while rental of equiptmen, tables, and costs associated with setting up tables, were paid for by the Student Center.
“The only thing that’s changed is a behind the scenes way of looking at it,” Vallante said of the slight change in sponsorship. “All of that is Keene State money.”
Vallante emphasized that it’s a great event that builds community on campus and he’s glad for it to continue for its fifth year.
