The 2011 Solar Fest kicked off on Oya Hill Saturday, April 30 as people gathered to soak in the sun. Hosted by Campus Ecology and powered entirely by sunlight, Solar Fest hosted a variety of music that was kicked off by the KSC African Drumming class. Other musical acts featured headliner Zach Deputy, Rubblebucket, Hot Mustard, Raptor Claw, and Northern Sea Robinson.
“We do Solar Fest to raise awareness about the alternative energy that we have available to us. The goal is to bring people together and learn to live a more sustainable life,” said Erik Breakell, Campus Ecology president. The organization has been around since 1996.
Campus Ecology had the New Hampshire based Sunweaver Company bring in one of their travelling solar electric systems. Their 1971 Ford school bus is equipped with an 800-watt solar array that is powerful enough to power the stage. Sunweaver owner Taylor Mauck says he has been powering events like this up and down the East Coast for about 13 years.
Mary Jensen, adviser of Campus Ecology, said Solar Fest has been going on for at least 15 years.
“A lot of this event is educational. We’re just letting people know that all this is possible with solar power,” Jensen said.
Johnny Westphal, Campus Ecology pubilc representative, said that although he wasn’t sure of the weather for the date set for Solar Fest, there was no point in getting stressed over something he had no control over.
As the sun broke through the early afternoon clouds, Westphal said, “The thing about Solar Fest is to not think about the weather. At not one point in the last week and a half have I checked to see what kind of weather we were expecting. When someone brings it up, its something that I immediately shy away from.”
Solar Fest also hosted different student organizations that showcased what they were all about. The Environmental Outing Club was promoting the Leave No Trace efforts, which reminds people to pick up after themselves when exploring nature. In addition, the Biology Club was having a plant sale, the Art Collective brought a PVC pipe organ, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers had Sustainable Product Design and Innovation students making hand crafted wooden pens.
Senior Colin T. McCarthy thinks solar power is the future.
“Times like this here at Keene State are the future and it is helping us change and take a step towards the right direction of a more beautiful future,” McCarthy said.
Headliner of the show and one-man-band Zach Deputy performed music that his website classifies as “Island infused drum ‘n bass” and “gospel ninja soul.”
“His beat-boxing is sick!” said senior Greg Imhoff. “He’s the biggest guitarist I’ve ever seen. He’s huge and he kills it!”
Freshman Mike Harpool also said he was impressed with Deputy’s performance.
“This guy’s got some funky beats! It’s sick that he is playing all by himself,” Harpool said.
Jensen said she liked that most of the bands were local. Hot Mustard is a bluegrass band from New Hampshire and both Raptor Claw and Northern Sea Robin are Keene State College bands.
Westphal summed up the event and said, “It’s a very signature piece to the spring time. It’s essentially a gathering to which we power the music with solar power and its pretty much to get people outside to enjoy themselves and soak up the lively energy of what’s next for the season.”
As the show came to a close, people gathered around to talk and take pictures with Deputy.
“I think it’s awesome,” said junior James Taddeo. “I hate to be so simplistic but everything really came together. The weather really held up for the most part. A lot of good vibes here.”
