To students at Keene State College, a MyKSC account may be one of the biggest relationships at school; for seniors, it will be one more aspect of their personal life that needs to change after Saturday’s graduation ceremony.
If it’s any consolation, Chief Information Officer at KSC Laura Seraichick said that these virtual identities won’t be used again for many years to come.
“When your life ends as a student here, your MyKSC account ends too,” Seraichick said. One problem Seraichick said she often gets asked about is that this often creates a gap in contact between alumni and the college.
Patty Farmer, director of Parent and Alumni Relations, said that although the volunteers of the Alumni Association have been looking into creating an email system, it isn’t currently something that can be done.
“Many years and staff and volunteer resources have gone into researching continuing email with KSC or email forwarding for life, however, a move in this direction is not feasible given financial and technical resources,” Farmer said.
Farmer did say that there is a published directory of alumni online, and she encouraged graduates to update their information as necessary.
A second way that Farmer suggested staying in contact was through Facebook or other social media networking sites.
“I would encourage students and alums to connect via the social media communities the Alumni Association has been working hard to develop on Facebook. We’d also encourage students and graduating seniors to connect on other social sites such as LinkedIn and Twitter,” Farmer said.
Overall, the reason for not keeping as on top of technology as some students would like comes down to financing it.
“While we do not have our own social media site, due to the costs associated with building and maintaning a site,” Farmer said, “some larger colleges and universities have email for graduates as part of their paid membership programs. The KSC Alumni Association membership is free.”
Seraichick said MyKSC accounts are to be deleted in July, to allow students adequate time to wrap up anything they may need to do, including looking at grades or registering for classes if they need to return.
“It gives people a little bit of a window of time to look at grades and make a good transition,” Seraichick said.
