The end of an era for Owls lacrosse

KSC women’s lacrosse team graduates eight impact seniors

For the last three years, the Keene State College women’s lacrosse team has been lead by a distinct core group of players.

Now seniors, these eight players have one last chance to leave their mark on KSC lacrosse.

“We never really had a lot of upper classmen,” senior attacker Jill Kirk said. “So we were somewhat forced to act as leaders since our sophomore year.”

Kirk said they all had ample opportunity to show what they were made of. This group of impact players has been the face of KSC women’s lacrosse for several years now.

“We know almost everything about each others’ style of play,” senior attacker Lauren Sawyer said, “which allows us to have great chemistry on and off the field.”

Being able to play together for so long is a huge benefit that this team takes full advantage of. Sawyer said that every year this core plays together they become more accustomed to each other and are able to be even more productive on the field.

“This year’s team is much like last year’s team as it is compromised of most of the same players,” senior defender Annie Brown said. “The main differences are the leadership and desire the seniors all have to make a mark on KSC women’s lacrosse in our final campaign.”

Kirk said the team is extremely talented and the reason they fell short last year was because they just weren’t hungry enough.

“Having no seniors last year is definitely what hurt us,” Kirk said. “In the back of our minds, we always knew we had another year. This year is a whole different story because we know this is our last year playing lacrosse, so we all definitely have more heart.”

Brown said each year the team has been able to bond and grow stronger together as a unit. She said all the players know their role on the team and, what it will take for them to be successful.

“The pressure of being a senior actually benefits my style of play,” Sawyer said. “I try to play every game like it’s my last because it soon will be.”

Kirk said this core have been really close since they came to KSC and started playing together their freshman year.

After all the effort these players have put in over the last several years, it can be depressing knowing that the end is drawing near.

“I don’t think it has really hit me yet that this is my last season of lacrosse,” Kirk said. “But once playoffs start, it’ll definitely change the way I play.”

Brown said it takes everything they have to win each and every game.

Now that they are seniors, this group remembers the heartbreak of past defeats, and desires nothing more than to beat every opponent.

“Some games are more intense than others as they have the revenge factor, and I know that I push myself to do my best to help our team win,” Brown said.

Kirk said the players do get a little upset whenever they talk about how few games they have left, and quickly end the conversation.

She said they know that they were going to do whatever it takes to give one last proud showing for the Owls this season.

“I can’t believe how fast the four years went by. And as the number of games wind down we really need to step it up and go out on a good note,” Kirk said.

After all these players have put into the game of lacrosse it’s hard to imagine giving up the sport at the end of their college career.

Brown said she works at a lacrosse camp and plans to try coaching high school lacrosse.

“I can’t see myself not being involved with lacrosse,” Kirk said. “I definitely want to coach and continue to play in a summer or winter league.”

Sawyer said she had similar aspirations of coaching at the high school level, or even at the college level if the opportunity presented itself.

There are several opportunities for these players to continue being involved in the sport they’ve put so much into over the years.

It seems many of the players have dreams of giving back to the sport they love by coaching the next generation of dedicated athletes.

  19. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  20. Just wanna remark on few general things, The website style is perfect, the content is very good. “By following the concept of ‘one country, two systems,’ you don’t swallow me up nor I you.” by Deng Xiaoping.
