“Sucker Punch” is a movie with action scenes involving gun-and-sword-wielding super women fighting against Nazi zombies, medieval knights, dragons, faceless glass robots, and giant samurai golems. All that, however, is only in the mind of the main character and is not all that central to the main story line.
The story line itself is much more intense than what happens in the action scenes. The main character, Baby Doll (Emily Browning), is traumatized by the deaths of her mother and sister. After their deaths her stepfather takes her to a mental hospital in Brattleboro Vt., and lends custody of her to the home. He also pays a corrupt orderly, Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac), to schedule Baby Doll for an illegal lobotomy. Right before she is given the Lobotomy she suddenly snaps into another location, a 1920s-style club. It is here where she meets her four other companions; Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), and Amber (Jamie Chung). All four are exotic dancers (and escorts) for the club. When Baby Doll joins the club from “The Orphanage” she is forced to be a servant and saves the life of Rocket before she’s assaulted by The Cook (Malcolm Scott).
After the event, Baby Doll is forced to dance for Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Cugino). It is in her first dance where Baby Doll retreats into her mind to find Wise Man (Scott Glenn) who gives her a katana, a pistol, and the information she needs in order to escape the club/mental hospital. After she receives the items she fights three samurai stone golems and miraculously wins. When she comes back to reality she learns her dancing has the power to ensnare everyone to the point of hypnotizing them. She then influences her four female companions to follow her plan of escape. Her plan is to use dancing as a distraction and to allow the girls to collect several key items.
After collecting the items, Baby Doll sacrifices herself to free Sweet Pea. When Baby Doll is caught the audience falls back to where they started, the lobotomy. In a twilight zone-like recap the audience learns the events in the club actually happened in the asylum and Baby Doll is left to the silent life of a lobotomy victim.
There are a few questionable things that are never answered, one is what time period are they in? Throughout the film there is an essence the events occur around the 1920s and 1930s, yet the characters have knowledge of World War II. Another question is why everything occurred in a club? If the same events apparently happened in a mental hospital, would it not be easier and much less complicated to have the movie set in a mental hospital than to have it switch scenes on the audience? If it’s for sex-appeal, it’s just not necessary for a successful film. It also seems when the settings changed women stepped down in authority and men became the leaders. Also, who is Wise Man? At first he seemed like a figment of Baby Doll’s imagination, but we later find out he is someone else.
The movie itself is not all bad however. It has incredible action scenes which stack up to “Animatrix” (2003) or “Equilibrium”(2002). The story line itself is actually decent when you forget the minor holes and actually think of every little detail and how it correlates with everything. The one thing that seemed a little too much was the sex appeal, but even that can depend on the viewers own personal tastes. Viewers who like the films “300”(2006) and “Watchmen”(2009) will find this movie to be amazing.
