On Tuesday, Sept. 6, Student Assembly held their first meeting of the 2011-2012 school year.
During the discussion and action portion of the meeting, Director of Residential Life and Housing Services, Kent Drake-Deese, and Assistant Director of Residential Life, Jana Jacobson, sought support from student government members regarding the guest policy as it pertains to Pumpkin Fest weekend.
“During Pumpkin Fest, problems increase dramatically in res. halls and on-campus,” Drake-Deese said. “We are interested in providing a solution.”
This proposed solution resides in limiting the number of guests allowed in the residence halls.
The current policy allows each student a three guest maximum. The new policy would be altered to allow each student to only have two guests during the weekend of Pumpkin Fest.
“With 2,750 or so students on campus, at the three guest limit were talking 14,000 people on campus,” Drake-Deese said. “We are not really equipped to deal with that many people.”
Jacobson explained the town of Keene is looking for support in making good choices on Pumpkin Fest as the city is trying to make Pumpkin Fest more family-orientated this year.
“Of the people who get transported to the hospital, about 75 percent of transports are guests,” said Jacobson. “People have noticed what Pumpkin Fest has transformed into.”
As someone who has lived in Carle Hall for three years, Student Body President Colin Daly said, “It is nearly impossible for resident assistants to keep tabs on over 1,000 people.” Daly explained that the three guest policy triples Carle’s “350 or so students.”
As for the change in policy, which would limit on-campus students to a maximum of two guests, Jacobson said, “We are waiting to finalize it.”
Jacobson said in addition to limiting the number of guests, upping enforcement by having officers at the front desks in residence halls, 24 hours a day, is her “unofficial plan.”
Jacobson said any final changes in policy regarding Pumpkin Fest weekend will be communicated through email and Facebook groups.
In other government news, Vice President Katelyn Williams spoke in regard to freshman elections. Williams said freshmen applications for office positions are due by Sept. 16 at noon and are to be delivered to the offices on the third floor of the L.P. Young Student Center.
The election will be held on Sept. 19 through MyKSC announcements, said Williams.
