This coming May kicks off the season for summer blockbusters, and this year’s crop of summer offerings looks to be a little less explosive than I had hoped. The first film to kick off the summer months is a superhero movie (big surprise!) on May 6. The film is “Thor,” starring newbie Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, and Natalie Portman. I’m hoping my skepticism about this film is relieved once I see it. The traditional, big budget, CGI-fest that is advertised in its trailer makes us hope there’s some substance behind the smoke and mirrors. The film focuses on the warrior Thor (Hemsworth) who is cast out of a magical realm by his father Odin (Hopkins) for his arrogance, and he’s forced to live among humans. He falls in love with a scientist played by Portman, and prepares to defend Earth against some evil villain his former homeland sends towards earth.
Judd Apatow finally gets some lady protagonists to the forefront of his films with “Bridesmaids,” which will see release on May 13. The hilarious “Saturday Night Live” alum Kristen Wiig stars in this film about a maid of honor who is both lovelorn and broke as she tries to navigate the expensive and bizarre trappings of planning a wedding with a group of wacky bridesmaids. Kristen Wiig finally gets her due as a leading lady, so this film shouldn’t disappoint.
Also opening in limited release on May 13 is a different kind of Will Ferrell film titled, “Everything Must Go.” He stars as Nick, who’s life begins unraveling when he loses his job, his wife, and his house all on the same day. With all his belongings on his front yard, Nick starts drinking again and lives off his front lawn. His self-preservation hangs in the balance, but two of his neighbors, including the delightful Rebecca Hall (from “The Town”) and actor Jordan Wallace, help him sell his worldly possessions. Ferrell has gone indie before, but this film, just judging from the trailer, seems to be a more realistic, human role for him, tinted with his signature humor.
On May 20, the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” film finally drops anchor. Can the film still stay afloat without Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley’s presence and Gore Verbinski’s direction? My instincts say that loyal “Pirates” fans will come out for this film and new faces Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane as Blackbeard, but I don’t think this film won’t reach the lofty heights of its predecessors, but it will still be successful as far as box office returns in the month of May.
The bachelor party continues May 27 when “The Hangover Part II” hits theaters. Back with the whole original cast, as well as Todd Phillips, the same director, the crazy crew goes to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. I must admit, I’m probably going to see this film, but the trailer looks so disappointing, so I have to admit, my expectations aren’t very high. The film looks like a carbon copy of the last, which I suppose is the point, but I would like to think of the first film as a standalone. Stu wakes up, not with a missing tooth this time, but a massive tattoo on his face. There’s no tiger in the bathroom, but there is a monkey. Expect lots of in-jokes from the last film, and basically the same plot, just in a different setting. I’m going to set my cynicism aside, however, and see if this film can equal the greatness of the first.
These are some of the films to expect in May. My best bets are “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Hangover Part II” as the most successful films this month, but there are many more films to look forward to this summer.
